I know that there has been a lot of discussion concerning windshield frame rust. One of the popular "fixes" seems to be sealing the rubber trim with silicone caulk.

My question is do people seal the rubber trim at the bottom of the windshields, or just the top trim?

Ernie,

Funny you should ask. A friend of mine had a windshield leak problem so he sealed the top and sides and it still leaked until he sealed the bottom.
The bottom leaked do to venturi action which we would have never guessed.

Got the answer??????????

Mine doesn't leak yet, but I know that there is some rust that was repaired during replacement of one side. I never thought about sealing the vertical rubber.

Did he seal both sides of the vertical trim or just the glass side?

Ernie,

In his case, the glass side was all it took to stop.

There are better sealing solutions than silicone. I gave up on it years ago. It will work for a while but tends to pull loose over time and then its is a bugger to clean off so you can seal it up right.

I believe most glass shops use a butyl caulking.
