I had to remove the large panel in my shower to do a plumbing repair. Before I put it back on, I know that I need to clean off the old caulk but I am not sure what kind of caulk to use.

Ideas??

Thanks

I recaulked the shower in our 01 Adventurer almost every year from 2003 - 2006 using the standard white latex caulk recommended in the Winnebago manual. It seems the extreme temperatures during storage (from -25 to + 95 ) were causing the shower wall material to expand and contract at a rate greater than the caulk could handle. At the 2006 GNR I asked a Winnebago rep for something that didn't need to be replaced on an annual basis. His answer was to use white silicone caulk.

When I mentioned that the manual said explicitly NOT TO USE SILICONE CAULK He said it was a throwback to the 1980's. The shower wall material used up until the 90's supposedly was not compatible with silicone. The silicone based caulks would not adhere to the material and the seams would leak.

The text warning to avoid silicone caulk supposedly remained in the owners manual until 2002 or 2003. I'm not sure of the accuracy as to when the shower material was changed or when the manuals were corrected. I do know however I removed all the latex caulk in the spring 2007 and replaced it with white silicone based caulk. It's gone through 3 winters and 3 summers without any deterioration or adhesion problems. I'm very satisfied with the way it has performed.
