My husband isn't sure in what sequence they work.. Anyone have any thoughts

The solenoid for the gas opens after the spark ignitor begins sparking. Are you sure the gas valve is open at the propane tank? Are the other gas appliances working? If the weather has been wet or humid where you are and there is no other problem you can find- try manually lighting it with a log lighter. There is another possibility...that the sail switch is not working- if everything else checks out.
