Good Evening everyone...
My bride of 26 years and I are looking at a 2008 Itasca Latitude 39W and want to see if there were any negative (-) issues with this diesel pusher. It has the 340 HP diesel.
One plus is the king bed...

When I purchased my Suncruiser I also was interested in the Latitude. This is Itasca's entry level unit into the diesel pushers - to me that just meant it has less of the amenities then the more expensive units.
It is structurally sound and has all the comforts of a diesel pusher, ride and handling. Go for it!!

HI Ray--
We have been very pleased with Winnebago in general and I have has some experience with that engine. I think you will be fine in the mountains. You won't win a speed race up the hills but you will be passing most of the trucks. Good luck and Happy New Year!

Welcome to IRV2 ...
Our Journey has a 330 HP Cat engine ... we have travelled across the Rockies in Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana.
We tow a 4200 pound toad.
We have never had a power issue ... you do learn to take it out of cruise control and do some manual downshifting at the start of long grades (for instance there is 6% uphill grade eastbound I-15 near Baker, CA that is at least 5 miles long) ...
On my engine ... I need to keep the RPMs at about 1600 to 1800 in order to keep the torque up ... so I downshift when I start up these longer grades instead of letting the engine lug down and then downshift automatically ...
There are very few 6% grades that are more than a mile or so long ...
There is a great book "Mountain West Directory for RVers" ... it tells where all the steep grades are in all the states west of the Mississippi ... it is available from Amazon.com ... I suggest you buy one and check it out as you plan your route out west ... I bought one after my wife "encouraged" me to drive up the "Bear Tooth" pass in Montana ...
we had a '99 Adventurer ... that was an adventure

My guys in the service department are always happier when I sell a Winnebago/Itasca, because they have fewer issues to worry about compared to many other brands.

I have a CAT 330 in a 2002 Journey and had no trouble last summer in the Rockies. I also tow a Jeep and never had a problem on any grade. My greatest concern was not in getting up the grades, but coming down the other side, but using the engine brake with careful application of the brakes took care of that problem.

As others have noted, the 340 HP diesel should be fine in that coach. I also have a 330 CAT in a 36' rig and tow a 4700 lb toad. Like SkiGramp, I drove the rig over the Beartooth in Montana/WY and other steep grades out West and never had a problem. You will not always sprint up steep grades but when you learn to downshift properly and keep the rpm's up, you will be fine.
If the coach has a rear radiator, you will need to periodically wash/clean the radiator/intercooler sandwich to keep the engine running cool.
As far as Winnebago quality, we've had 2 Winnes and have been pleased with the overall quality for money paid. Our previous rig was a 1997 Adventurer with 98,000 miles when we traded it. I was impressed with how solidly that coach was built and held up over those miles. Also, IMO, their customer service is outstanding.

Pat and I are ready to do some dealing and getting rid of our current 2008 HR that has been nothing but trouble since we got it in August 08.

We have the Destination 39W, with the earlier Cummins 300hp engine. No problems climbing anything! As was said before, you're not going to win a drag race, but will be faster than most trucks.
We are below our load capacity, and tow a 3200 lb MINI.
