A few days ago the " on my '99 UF was working fine. Now, although the extension works fine, the steering will not tilt in any form or fasion. Has anyone else had this happen and is there a simple DIY fix?

Give 1.800.FTL.HELP a call and they will walk you through a release. If you don't get through right away, leave a message they have a 100% call back rate.

Maybe you should contact Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) for advice as he had this same problem in the movie "Vacation".

My '98 winni chieftain w/ freightliner chassis has the same problem.
I am unable to tilt the wheel . It won't unlock.
I have just driven it for the last year in one position.
Anyone have any expierence with repairing this problem themselves.
Retired guy here with limited wallet.
Bob

I had the same problem on mine, Freightliner. Then at RV rally some friends were in RV and a tiny lady knew what to do. She just gave it a pull with great force and all was well. Mine is still hard to move and I have to use a lot of force. I mentioned this at a dealer and he said just jerk it, and cannot won't hurt it.

Problem solved! I took the housing off the steering column. If you look at the assembly, it resembles a rack gear and all I did was spray some grease on it then pry with a heavy screwdriver. It popped loose and now occasionally gets stuck but releases when I give a really heavy tug on the release lever. You are absolutely right! I don't think you can hurt it, not as heavily built as it is. The key is to use a lube that won't evaporate or dry out. I use the same on it as I use on the step assembly and the step well cover.
