Transfer Switch

This site has been very helpful to me with a lot of great fix problems. Now I have to change the Transfer switch and cord on my 2004 Itasca Sundancer. It's in the basement by the power cord . Small area. How the heck do you get it out to replace it and what is the part number and price? It burned out at lower end park for a one night stop. (Ma Ma always said stay away from one night stands). Slow learner. I'm in the Ft. Myers Fl. area and am having a tough time getting it serviced, so try it myself. Thanks, Chuck:

Hi Chuck, They never seem to put things in convenient locations. Most transfer switches are screwed down. But, before you attempt anything MAKE SURE all power sources are dead. Unplug the unit, disconnect the battery cables to the coach, inverter and the generator. Then verify no power with a test meter before sticking your hands in the box.
I do not know specifically which transfer switch your unit has but, when you open the front cover to the switch box there will usually be a label and specifications for the switch on the cover. They usually run around $125 - $200. Remove the cover to the transfer switch metal box and you will see the connections and most likely the mounting screws. Take a picture of the wiring in case you need to refer to it later. Then remove the wires, unscrew the box and replace.
Hope that helps.

Hey Chucksterfxw, unfortunately you have learned a lesson in not having a Surge Guard. So before you go out buy a new Transfer switch consider purchasing one that includes the Surge Guard Protection. They make them in both 30A and 50A so there is no excuse. Because you are changing everything please make certain that you replace the strain relieves on the shore power cable. These ensure the cable does not move and cause the connections in the Transfer Switch Box to work there way loose.
Also, this is something that should be checked at the beginning of every season to ensure the are indeed tight.
You can pick up a Transfer Switch/Surge guard at Camping World or any big RV Dealer. It's worth the extra money now for the Surge Guard instead of paying like you are going to do, later or worse case, fire ball the MH and loose everything.
