10 below in Minnesota last night. Had the Journey plugged into 30amp shore power in our driveway in preperation of an early morning departure for suuny Florida. No such luck. Rig was frozen solid in the morning. House batteries were very low Engine batteries were OK but gen-set and engine would not start. No engine heat.

Called my friendly Winnebago dealer and was told "Oh yes, very common, the transfer switch is stuck!!!" He went on to explain that due to space constraints Winnebago installs the switch horizontally even though it's designed to be installed vertically. Problem gets worse when it's cold.

He said "Just go out and give it a couple of gentel wacks with a rubber hammer." Did as I was told and the power popped right on. Hour later the engine started. Let it idle for 5 minutes and started the gen-set.

Happy ending

Mine ATS is mounted on a side-wall, so guess that is "vertical" ?? They also tend to stick if you are in the habit of switching power souces (shore vs genny) with large power loads running. That burns/pits the contact points and they tend to stick together. I shut down everything I can except maybe refrigerator and lights when changing power sources. I was not as nice to my original ATS and it did stick several times, requiring a couple of sharp blows with a fist to pop loose. My new ATS installed after a lightning strike in 2008 is treated nicer than the first one was, and has never given me a problem.
