Unified tow brake installation/ I'm stumped

Greetings,

I have a 2004 Adventurer 35u WorkHorse chassis and I tow a Honda Element. I have the Unified Tow Brake kit and have successfully installed it on the toad side. On the coach side of the installation my progress has ground to a halt.

I can't figure out how to run the wiring harness into the coach to wire the controller. It is like a fortress!

I hope I'm overlooking something obvious. Help, please.

Bruce

Not sure if mine is the same but the wiring for your controller is hidden behind the fuse panel on the LH side next to the floor. Mine is an '07 Suncruiser and the wires were there. On the US Gear website they show you where it is and what color the wires are. http://www.usgear.cc/utb_ec4129.htm There is a wire from the brake circuit on the motorhome (orange), a ground (black), and a signal wire (blue) that runs to the back of the coach. That wire is yellow at the back of the coach has the code LLG on it. That is the signal wire to the toad. The power wire for the controller you will have to find a switched 12v source on that fuse panel. I got a fuse panel tap for it at Autozone so I could use an existing fuse. For the power wire that goes to toad, I tapped onto the battery wire near the generator and installed a 15 circuit breaker near the battery terminal.
Feel free to contact me privately if you like. I went through all the problems you might be having.
Tom

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the response. I'm in better shape today than I was when I posted my call for help.

You have an '07, mine's an '04. I think they started shipping them prewired in '05, so I'm doing it from scratch and I don't believe there is a wire hidden behind the fuse panel.

I've been to the usgear site, but not recently. Nothing in my instructions suggests there might be motorhome-specific instructions. I'll sure take a look in just a few minutes.

After a frustrating search, off and on for several days, I finally found a relatively thin panel under the hood and found I could reach it from the inside by running my arm into the dark through the space made when I lift the dash up and open. You can't seen anything, but I can reach back there. I drilled pilot holes and used a Dremel tool to open up just enough to run the UTB plug into the driver's compartment.

I spent a fair amount of time trying to identify the wire to splice into at the brake light switch, but don't have it yet. I'll study your notes, but it sounds like our situations are fairly different. If I have that wrong, let me know.

This is one of my most ambitious motorhome DIY projects I've done. My next will be to try and fix the installation of our See-Levels system the pros bungled.

Thanks, also, for this offer to talk with me privately. You may well hear from me.

I'm intrigued by your installation of the power wire at the generator. My instructions say to run it to the chassis battery and mount the circuit breaker as near as possible to the battery. That means I'm running the wire way forward. Your method sounds easier and neater.

Hi Tom
I just checked the usgear site and it does appear we have two different kits. Mine is the UTB-1000, your's is probably the TV-1000k for prewired units. I saw "instructions for 2007 and later" somewhere.

Thanks again.

I just updated my FREE web site with all the photo's of my UTB install.

I used some power and ground wires that we unused by Newmar to hook up the controller. There is a photo of how I installed the blocking diode in the brake circuit.

Hi Dale,

Thanks for the post. I've taken a quick look at your pictures and it all looks pretty familiar to me. That's a comfort. It looks like I ran my wire into the driver's compartment in pretty much the same place you did. That's a comfort. I'll study the diode installation in more detail later. We've got an appointment to get to.

Thanks again.
