Well I did it; came home drained the water tanks/hot water heater Put the MH in the garage Plugged it in , I allways plug it in for a day or 2 to top the batteries off. Then I turn the power off. Maybe once a month turn it on for a 1/2 day; A day later, I went in OOPS the coffee pot was still on, OOPS the water heater was on, And I had drained it 2 days before, And it was plugged in. Now I will have to take the tank out and replace that. It is a 10 gallon Atwood 3 way; Any one have to do that;; Life is good , When you pay attention;

Most likely will have to replace the elec heating element. OOOPS!

And don't feel bad. I've made almost every mistrake one could make in an RV......almost. And I'm working on the rest of them.

It depends on the water heater you have. Some have circuit breakers they are 2 round black rubber thingies on the front of the water heater usually toward the top. press them in and see if that works. (you don't have to press hard). Other water heaters have a fusable link, it is on the brown wire coming down the front of the heater, they are usaully bent in an L shape. check for continuity.
Most of the time when you plug in an empty water heater one of these items will protect it. Good luck
