I reently installed a Water Softener in my Horizon 40AD. I did not want to be lifting the heavy water softener in and out of my compartments. I positioned the Water Softener in the first compartment forward of the Water Bay and ran two water hoses out the side of the compartment. I used a horizontal electrical cover to make a door for the hose access. I used quick disconnect water connections for the hook-up outside the coach. I am now using this set-up and it connects quite easily and I never have to lift the water softener.
See photos below:

Water lines running to coach and water source.

Great job on the set up. I've been wanting to do something like that. Thanks for the great idea. Also love your electrical box idea.
Best regards...

Rex - really neat idea

I always drain my softener first thing when getting ready to go because it takes about 15 minutes to empty the water from it, otherwise it is too heavy to deal with.

John,

There is no need to drain the water softener with this set-up. When I disconnect the water I pull the two water hoses back into to compartment and close the horizontal electrical door. I then connect the two ends to each other with the quick disconnect fittings. Creates a closed loop and no leaks.
