Unhappy Waxing RV Disaster

a well meaning friend has been detailing the exterior of my 2005 Winnibago adventurer. He's applied wax over quite a lot of the upper portions, and front and back of the MH only to have a whirly streaky mess. Neither of us realized that apparently, the oxidization should have been removed before application of "Malco" wax. Now what can we do.?? it looks really bad..

You're going to need to polish the surface to remove the wax and oxidation. It sounds like you might not have much in the way of exterior care tools, so I would recommend this Random Orbital Polisher from Amazon as it's not too expensive and comes with pads.

The following polish is easy to use Meguiar's Ultimate Polish

I would then recommend watching some YouTube videos on how to polish. One of the most important things is to do small 2' x 2' sections at a time as you don't want the polish to dry on the surface. When you're done polishing the coach you can then apply the wax and it should look great.

Good luck on your project.

You can also buy a Clay Cloth to get rid of oxidation........automotive paint stores have them.....

thanks so much. I'm going to go buy a "clay cloth" today. I have a polisher but I don't think it's very good so i'm going to check out your recommendation on Amazon. Thanks again.

A clay bar or clay cloth does not remove oxidation and I doubt it will remove much if any of the wax. It's purpose is to remove surface contaminates like bird droppings, tree sap, etc to make the finish smooth.

In any case, even after claying you will still need to polish the surface to remove the wax and oxidation. Here's a quick tutorial although I don't recommend using a sponge to wash the vehicle.

I have used rubbing compound to remove the oxidation on my 1999 Adventurer. Caution needs to be used with this. If it is real bad get the coarser grit and then use the finer grit. Do not use a full blown buffer on the Filon siding as it can create to much heat and damage the siding. A random orbital used carefully has worked for me with no problems.

I have found that once the waxing is done I use a car wash soap like Blue Corral that has a wax in it helps maintain the finish while also causing the rain to bead right off the windshields when driving.

Thumbs up waxing rv disaster

Thanks so much to those of you who replied to my question. We tried the meguiar's light grit polishing compound and it worked really well. It actually brought up most of the shine on the fiberglass areas even before waxing. I picked up a better orbital polisher and was pleasantly surprised. It turned out better than I'd expected. There's still some buffing to do, but so far the old gal's looking pretty spiffy.
