What is the life expentancy of the slide out awnings?

Greetings!! -

The Boss (wife) asked me the other day how long we should expect our slideout awnings to last on our 2015 Itasca Suncruiser.

We took a little damage on the large awning in the recent hurricane force winds in the bay area, but I straightened it out and it seems almost healed.

I don't have a clue as how long they should last. And I realize the true answer will be based on a lot of variables, but in general, what is the life expectancy on the awnings?

Thanks
Jerald Pendleton

It's usually the stitching that goes first. 10 years outside, your doing pretty good!

Mines 10 years old . I'm just starting to see pin holes up where it's connected to motorhome and it's in a shed 6 months of every year. Mines a Manuel style not power. I'm only guessing but electric ones would have other issues with age .

I just had to replace one of my original ones which tore after 12 years (outside). I decided to go ahead and replace the fabric in the other three as well, but I haven't had a chance to get it installed on them yet.

I just replaced our slide toppers last July at GNR. They were 11 years old. I was starting to see daylight in the stitching.

I just replaced two A&E slideout awnings on a 2015 motprhome for a customer. I could not believe that the awnings were in shreds from the sun. I checked around and found A&E had used some bad fabric in 2015. I went back with another fabric. 3 yr warranty instead of the A&E 1 yr.

Mine are now 12 years old but would like to replace them. Surprisingly, they aren't shredded at all. They do take a beating from the sun and I think strong winds really take a toll on them. -RT

At the chance of risking my luck, our awnings are the originals and still appear to be in good condition.

Apparently, we were not as lucky as most. Had to replace both toppers after 4 years, although we spend 4-5 months in FL each winter, so they saw a lot of sun. The stitching on the original Carefree toppers came undone (UV rot), replaced them with Tough Top Awning toppers. Very happy with new product, Tough Top provides hints on how to make installation easier.

The first awning on our 2001 Adventurer lasted 8 years before someone who will remain unmentioned didn't have the angle properly set during a heavy rain storm. Rather than shedding the rain it filled up. By the time I noticed it, it was too late. I tried to lower one end, but the load was too heavy. The whole thing collapsed destroying the fabric and one of the support arms.

Had I not done something stupid I think it would have still been fine when we traded it off in 2013. Our new Adventurer has a gas shock at the rear support that's supposed to collapse should someone make the same stupid move. Hopefully we'll never have to find out whether or not it works.
