We want a new Journey/Meridian either 34Y or 40L. I was told to get one with the "old" engine. We'd like to wait and get a 2011 (July 2010 build) but will they need to use the new 2010 engines by then.

It depends on the chassis.

Call Freightliner. Great folks to talk to..Ask for the correct department and then ask them if they can give you any idea as to when they will be using the engine you want..Good Luck

Freightliner bought a lot of Cummins '09 engines, and Spartan did not. Cat no longer makes on highway engines.
Newmar has switched back to Freightliner for some models just to get these '09 engines.
I believe the '10 engine is about $10~$15K more.
It is believed the '09 engines will last well into 2011 model year, however it all depends on demand.
