Winnebago caravans

The new WIT CLUB NEWS lists 10 caravans offered by Winnebago Outdoor Adventures. Prices range from $104 to $311 per day, averaging $160 for a single person. Who thinks these caravans are worth the money?

First, let me say, I haven't been on one yet, but planning on doing one(Grand Circle Tour) in a couple of years (we already have an RV Road Trip planned for 2016 and 2017). It sure sounds like a deal for me, when all I have to do is show up. No planning involved for a month long RV trip with the route, each day's driving distance, RV sites, tours and what to see at each location already planned out for me. Plus I'll get to make some new friends along the way.

I would say they are definitely worth the money. We've been on 4 caravans through the years. The first was to Alaska, the second to Newfoundland, the third was the Great River Road and the fourth was the Grand Circle.

We'll be going to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta with them later this year. The Balloon Fiesta is technically a rally since the motorhomes don't travel once they meet. It does however have many of the same aspects of a caravan

They plan the route, make reservations at the campgrounds, provide several meals, they also have several day trips and evening social get togethers. In addition there are a number of "free days" when you can do as you please. If you want to go someplace other than where the caravan is going you can "sign out" for a day or more and meet them at a designated place down the road.

All the host and tail enders are "volunteers" in that they only get paid their expenses they do not get paid a salary. The caravans generally cost about 60% of the the same caravan with a company like Adventure Caravans or Fantasy Tours.

It's great way to meet fellow RVers, and see the sights with minimal planning on your part.

We've been on the road for over 4 years, and just took our first caravan into Mexico in February because we weren't comfortable driving down there alone. We had a great time and thought it was worth the money, but on that trip we basically sat on the beach and partied for 8 days.

For trips covering longer distances with lots of stops we prefer to be on our own. We've talked with folks in caravans who complained about the schedule and not having enough time to "decompress" along the way.

You should try one and see how you like it. We know people who go several times a year and love it, but I don't think it's for everyone.

Good luck!

we don't. at this point in our lives and RV experience (30-years) we prefer the independence RVing affords. we rarely make reservations anywhere unless we must be somewhere specific at a specific time or it's a major holiday weekend. otherwise we just pick a direction from home and take off. we usually travel 3-mos in the spring and 3-mos in the fall and finding a spot for a day, week or month has never been an issue. we don't like being held to a schedule or pre-planned activities. we like the freedom of moving on after a day or staying an extra week. that may change as we age (we're in our mid 60's) but for now no caravans for us.

When I was President of our W.I.T. Chapter we did several tours and rallies. As well as a couple of G.N.R.s. Have friends that are both leader and 'tail enders'. It is interesting to watch as they chased qualifications to achieve those positions and the hoops they go through with their tours. Other chapter members have done just about all the tours.

We found they are not for us. We are not 'group' people. In addition we have a pet and found they are not really pet friendly.

The only one we would consider repeating at this point is the one to Mexico just to travel with the group.

The best part for us was meeting the people and talking about our rigs and travels. We can do that on our own but all sharing WBGO products gives an instant common ground. We like to plan our own destinations and travels. Find it part of the fun. Plus we can avoid the "if it is Tuesday we must be...".
