Winnebago ERA vs View

I own a 2014 ERA and love it, except for a few things, the small bath, the propane generator, and the location of the generator underneath the unit, which is a real pain to get to when the main circuit breaker kicks out.

If I trade for a View, I get a somewhat larger bath and a diesel generator with easy access, not to mention more storage, larger tanks and the slideout.

So far it looks like the downside to trading into a View is that it's slightly wider and gets worse mileage (I recently got 16.3mpg traveling across Nebraska going 75mph).

My main concern is the mileage, it seems they are all over the board. I was going to get the one without the bed over the cab thinking the sleeker profile might get a little better mileage, though my dealer said there isn't a noticeable difference.

I'm looking for opinions on anyone that has gone from the ERA to the View or vice versa.

We had a 2010 Itasca Navion 24J a couple years ago. We got about 17mpg with it on the highway at about 60 to 65mph.
Also, the standard Navion/View genny is propane, however I think there is an option for diesel. We loved our Navion but wanted something bigger.
I don't really know anything about the ERA so I can't help you with a comparison.
Good Luck

I have a 2012 View and typically get 16.5 to 17 mpg. My generator is propane but as I remember there was a diesel option. The size and floor plan of the View works out well for us. Large enough to have a decent size bath and living area but small enough to handle well and easily park.

You can expect to avg 15-17mpg....you may get more or less depending on speed, weather, terrain, etc...

I just bought the ERA and love it. I love the way it drives and the maneuverability. I also like the way it looks. There is a new floor plan with a slide. Have you looked at it? It has a HUGE bath. It wasn't my cup of tea, but worth a look see.

we bought a Trend 23L. It is the same length as the ERA and the View. It has a large bath an electrically operated bed better storage than I expected. It has two floor plans. The generator is gas not LP. First trip was 13 MPG. they say we should be getting better. Maybe just a new engine. Down side is that the gen is under the unit like the ERA and it is limited in what it can tow (2000lb).
Very good in Traffic and easy to park.
Just something else to think about.

Having the generator under the unit is one of the big factors of why I'm making the switch. According to the manual, you are supposed to check the oil every 8 hours, not an easy task. I've also had the main circuit breaker kick out and then had to slide across the ground with virtually no clearance to remove the access panel and reset it.

I just completed an oil change, it was a PAIN!!! I farm and have changed oil in virtually every kind of vehicle and equipment, but this one took the cake! I had to put the ERA up on blocks to get enough clearance to slide under it with my creeper. To add the oil, I used a large syringe to squirt oil into the unit as there wasn't enough room to pour it in.

Thank you for your input, I like the Trend as well, VERY nice unit! That is awesome mileage as well!

we had a View but gave up on it for a couple of reasons. One of those reasons was that it rode like what it was - a delivery truck! I know they've improved the seats and reworked the suspension, but if you can rent one for a longer drive, do it. 200 miles on ours felt like an eternity.

That's interesting COTuscany, I assumed it would be similar to my 2014 ERA, which I'm very happy with. I would rather drive it cross country than my F150 or SUV. What year was your View? I'm going to have to do some research on that to see what if any improvements they've made. Thank you for your input!

I also find COTuscany's comment interesting. We had a 2011 View and now have a 2015 and it rides far better than any motorhome we've had (Class C and Class A) other than our DP with airbags and computerized ride. It is very comfortable.

I don't understand this comment at all. One of the things that sold me on the View was its very comfortable ride. It's not a Class A DP, but as far as I am concerned is the best in its class in terms of drivability and all-day comfort. In fact if anything it could use a slightly firmer suspension.

I don't know what model COTuscany was driving but it would be interesting to find out. The ride on our Via is very comfortable and quiet whether on the highway or back roads. Even after an occasional 7 to 8 hour driving day, I am not tired or stiff when we arrive. In our DP I would be exhausted after a similar drive. We have a 2013 Via 25T with some of the last Flexsteel driver and passenger seats and it is very comfortable. Love our Via.

The main difference will be in handling performance. The View will exhibit more body roll in turns and when leaving parking lots and such. My Navion came with the diesel generator option, very easy to get to but most likely the loudest of them all. We downsized from a 38' class "A" to the Navion and wished we had done that a long time ago. Cant say enough about, its just a very nice & comfortable unit parked or going down the hi-way.

I don't remember the exact model, but it was the first year with the V6 engine. It was a full C, not the B version. Unfortunately, in those years they were still using the stock black seats and they killed my back after a couple hundred miles. It seemed to me that the suspension was overloaded as it tended to bang and wallow some. I do know that when I added up all the weights, there was only about a 500lb buffer from max.

I think that Winniebago and Mercedes have made some good adjustments. The new seats seem much better, and Winniebago seems to be using lighter weight materials based on the new ones I've looked at. Perhaps Mercedes has made changes to the suspension?

Ours was back when they were still carrying a Dodge badge.

We recently went from a 2006 View 23J to a 2010 WGO Vista 30W so our View is up for sale but one thing we immediately noticed is that the View is more comfortable to drive. It's also more versatile. For example, once each month, I have an evening meeting at a studio 80 miles from home. With the View, it was no big deal to drive down and spend the night in a local casino parking lot. Not so with the Vista, the logistics of moving it is a major hassle.

The propane vs diesel generator decision hinges largely on how much you intend to use it. In both cases, the generator is easily accessible from the side.

As for mileage, I regularly got 17MPG but that's driving between 55-65mph. There's not a Class C out there that will get 16+ at 75mph. There's just too much frontal profile.

We bought a 2014 View 24M last December and love it! It drives like a dream and typically drive it 10+ hours at a time. In the past year we have put just over 14,500 miles on it traveling to FL and WI from VA. For a family of three, this RV is perfect for us as we travel. I would recommend a View to anyone who is interested in an RV.

As for mileage, I am only averaging 13.7MPG, but that is driving it the View hard, 65-75MPH on the interstate. I would love to get 16+MPG as other View owners state they get in their RV. Maybe if my lead foot would back off a bit...

I get about 15-16 (at 60-65 mph) in the flat in the east (no wind and flat) and about 14-15 in the west (where there is never no wind and it is never flat.) As to those who claim 16+ MPG in a View or Navion at 65-70 MPH... well, I will need to see that to believe it...
