Wiring a new 12 volt light fixture?????

OK....here's what I want to do. There is a standard 12 volt rv light fixtrure mounted below the storage cabinet above the bed on the front wall of the trailer. I want to tap into that wiring and run wires so that I can attach a 12 volt reading light to the wardrobe cabinet side next to the bed. I've already figured out how to run the wires, so my questions are:
1. Any reason why I can't do this?
2. What is the best gauge wire to use?
3. Multi strand wire or solid core?
4. Best place/web site for 12 volt

Thanks so much for any help you can provide!!!

I'll take the first 3 and let someone else grab #4.

1. Load on the circuit. It would be wise to figure out what is on that circuit and compare that to the fuse supporting it. If you are close, you can reduce load by switching to LED lamps.

2. Wire gauge: The wiring you are seeing in the camper should be labeled, use the same or higher (Smaller number). If not labeled #14 is a safe bet.

3.Multi Strand. Easier to work with, and there is no reason to use solid in your application.

How do you plan to "tap into" the wiring? Will you add your wires to the connection point for the fixture or do you plan to add a new splice along a run of wire?

Stranded is the only wire to use in an RV. The travel vibrations are more likely to adversely affect solid wire. A small nick can soon become a break. This is less likely with stranded and stranded is much easier to run. Just avoid kinking. Makes for a much more difficult pull and could damage the wire. If you go to LED, as already suggested, the new load will be minimum on the circuit you are tapping into.

Hope your project goes well and gives the results you are seeking.
Rick
