Have thought about going to Alaska in RV. The cost of a WIT caravan is nearly $4,600. It includes a few meals and camping fees. The great campanionship with fellow travelers would be wonderful; however, I think wife and I could make the trip without having to pay what seems to me to be an extra $4,600. I have emergency road service, I'd still have to pay for fuel. Am I not understanding something here?

We have not taken a WIT tour (caravan), but did take a Creative World Travel (now Fantasy RV Tours) caravan of the Canadian Rockies in 2004.

We appreciated the expertise of experienced tour guides, the companionship of other campers on the tour, and the coordinated events built into the caravan (shows, meals, etc.). We did and saw things we would not have done or seen if we had taken a similar trip on our own. All was done "first class" and we plan to do this again, and would encourage others to do one.

The other factor is that you pay your fee before starting the caravan, so with the exception of fuel costs, possibly a few tips for meals and the cost of souvenirs all costs are covered.

Having a "tail gunner" who always brings up the rear in the event someone runs into difficulty, whether it is the RV or a health issue is added comfort.

Fantasy Tours doesn't have you drive "caravan style" down the road. They give you the itinerary on where you need to be and at what time and you drive at your own pace.

As I said earlier, we plan to do another tour as soon as I am able to take care of some personal health issues.

Another thought for you to consider, Art, just to see if this type of travel is "worth it for you" would be to take a less costly trip with WIT or one of the many other tour companies that offer this convenient form of travel. That is what we did in the trip described above, and as I said, we thoroughly enjoyed it and found it "to be worth it" for us.

We took the long WIT tour to Alaska in 2005. For 2008, that is the second tour. Having a group to travel with was great. WIT provided more than just a few meals - they provided many. In addition to the camping sites, they also provided many tours, tickets to many attractions, and also had the experts - caravan leader and tail ender to keep us on the trail. Considering that WIT is not a profit maker like other tour companies, their prices are very reasonable.

I agree that you might want to take a shorter caravan or rally to see what WIT provides, but I'm convinced that the Alaska Caravan is a great package.

Took the Alaskan caravan with WIT in 2002 and have been on several others. You get your monies worth, the friendships made, alone were worth it. The side trips seem to be quite pricey, but in as much as they are prepaid you don't need to make the choice of go, no go. I hope to go again.

We went to alaska by ourselves and stayed longer and saw more then the caravan for less money but we were alone but and stayed for months. We are going to Calgary with WIT for the fellowship and I am tired of planning these months long trips, I figure I have to get to Banff and to Glacier and lots of other places so will let WIT take care of the 2 week Calgary trip, hope to meet some new friends.

Thanx for all of the input and advice. WE have not made up MY mind yet, but it is good to know that you all had positive things to say about a WIT trip.
