Ok, not my rig don't know much at this point. On my way home from work and saw a nice Newmar mountain aire broke down on side of road, nice older gentleman says it's overheating and don't know why. I looked in the engine bay (diesel) and the main belt is missing, generator/alternator won't turn by hand ( if that is what I was turning)
He's on his way to town to look for a belt and will call me when he returns. So who knows what we need to be looking for or doing besides putting this main belt back on?
Ron

There have been recurring coolant problems with the ISM engine. He needs to call Cummins 1-800-DIESELS™ (1-800-343-7357)

And/or Spartan (800) 543-4277

Methinks this may be a much more involved problem than just a thrown belt. Hope not for his sake.

Mark

If the alternator wasn't turning by hand without any belt on it, then a new serpentine belt isn't going to do much good. I would imagine that the alternator bearings are probably shot and froze up which in turn tore up the serpentine belt.

Sound like a good time to have Coach-Net come out and have them tow it to a service center before destroying another belt. However, that's only if he is a member. Maybe he has some other emergency roadside service.

I will let him know that as well, just waiting on a phone call, may drive down the road to see if he made it back and just was hesitant to actually ask for help. Anyway to free up the alternator/ generator? Can he drive it or really bad idea?

The thing you're turning... does it have a long driveshaft on the other side? Spartan has a bulletin on the hydraulic fan system, which (at least in my case) involved replacing the entire gearbox. That gearbox also requires maintenance. I wonder if it seized up.

Looking at the rear of the coach towards the engine it's on the left side of the motor at the 10 o'clock position, it's got a pulley attached to a barrel like electric motor. Couldn't see any farther forward but looks like an oversized alternator with one electric plug attached.

The Spartan fan belt situation has been ongoing, so first: 1. Has this gentleman had any of the previous service done on the belts?; 2. Going to town and getting a belt is a sure-fired way to a waste of energy (unless there's a Cummins dealer); 3. Once it cools down it won't be harmful to drive it a few miles....should be headed toward a place which will help and/or safe.

It doesn't matter now, but here's a picture of the fan drive. Even if there weren't issues with it, there's still preventive maintenance that needs to be done... and it's not fun!

I was looking at a 2011 Essex and it had that setup, sure looked hokie to me!! And you sure won't get a new or rebuilt alternator at NAPA from the looks of it.
