Not sure of the function of this. More important, if I turn it off will it stop the batteries from charging?

Actually, I don't believe there is a "12 volt" switch overhead. If you are referring to the voltage switch, it is a momentary switch that checks the battery (House Bank) voltage. If this is not whart you are asking about, please clarify.

Below the switch, 1", is a second switch. It turns off the 12v power. I just want to make sure that as long as I am plugged in, it will continue to charge the batteries.

The 12V switch will cut off your house batteries from being discharge while in winter storage.
The small red light will go off when disconnect switch is operated.
If you have the coach shore power hooked up leave switch on with the small red light lit and both house and chassis batteries will be charged by your BIRD System.
Top rocker switch reads voltage of your house batteries.
There is also a LP detector switch in my display panel that will cut it off so it will not discharge the chassis battery.

Are they shut off from charging? The batteries will drain without any load and I want to make sure they stay charged. I always have it on 50a so I'm not sure if I should shut it off.

If you have the Intellitec disconnect 007 shows you should leave it on. They way Newmar's are set up, the inverter will charge the house batteries even with the switch off, but the connection to the BIRD to charge the chassis batteries will be open if you have the switch off.

As long as you are hooked to 50A (or any shore power), with the switch on the coach battery bank will be charged and the chassis battery bank will be charged through the BIRD.

As Stewart says leave switch on, mind is on all winter charging my AGM's and 10 year chassis battery.
If you have wet cells you would need to check water levels once a month anyway.
Have done same for all my 3 Newmars never had battery problems even when I had wet cells.
