18 DS pegboard no more, kind of

I removed the pegboard and rack form my 18 DS to gain access to the fresh water tank. My goal was to up date the venting system to what the 19 DS now has. Let me start by saying reinstalling the pegboard and trim is a real pain in the ass. I came up with a couple of simple mods that make putting things back together a lot easier. There are two carpeted boards that just fall out when you remove the pegboard, at first I couldn’t figure out what they were for. Turns out these two boards are there to secure the shelf/rack unit. When reinstalling the pegboard, holding these boards is like building a ship in a bottle. In the first picture you can see that I cut two 5 inch pieces of aluminum channel that I screwed to the floor behind the two boards, trapping the two boards between the original aluminum strip at the floor. Next I added a vertical pice of aluminum channel behind the board on the left. On the right side board I notched the upper right corner to fit into the chassis frame bracing. Now with the two boards secured, I taped the top aluminum cross channel in place and installed the “non pegboard”, well actually it’s the original pegboard install inside out. Turns out that Newmar nicely carpets the back of the pegboard board, check out the finished pictures, what do you think?

When I did all that on my 2015 DS, I made a 2” wide slot the height of the FW tank, to visually check the water level if needed. I copied the idea from another member on the list.

Stu-I felt the urge to peek behind the pegboard and also modded the overflow also. While I was in there I added a duplex outlet so my power drill could recharge. I then replaced the OEM pegboard with some repurposed factory painted peg board I had lying around. Removed the dust cover from the backside and reapplied to the new board. All is good however I like BULY’s idea of viewing the water tank.

Like the storage upgrade...do you also have an outdoor TV? Isn't that area where Newmar typically hides it? Mine is a true pegboard now but might put a TV there instead.

I have a 4369, the tv is up high in the kitchen slide. I believe the 4363 has it down low in that compartment

As far as the water level, so the gauge seems pretty accurate. I watch it as I filled the tank all of the way to overflow as a test of the new Vent, overflow system. I can always add the viewing slot if things change.

That's where the TV is in a 2005 Essex. Beware of the type of door before you plan on installing a TV. Mine has a vertical lift door in that location and the pantograph arms limit the TV size.

I changed my overflow and venting last week and did the same thing. I don't use the pegboard so I put the carpet facing out.

I like it too. A very popular modification. To say that reinstalling the panel in the Newmar way is difficult, is very understated. I too changed a bunch of stuff like screwing those side boards into position. I really like the looks of the carpet vs pegboard. More finished.

Hi - Can someone point me in the direction of what the changes were in '19 for the fresh water tank venting in a Dutch Star? I'd like to be able to make left hand turns without being a street sweeper. TIA.

Tom

18 Original has an air emitter and a 90 degree elbow for the overflow

19 has a tee fitting, one end goes to overflow and the other goes high in the compartment with a vet screen install at the top,

I removed and plugged the air emitter, install the tee in place of the 90 and installed a long hose and vent screen

Stuart, you did a great job. Looks just like the 19s now. I like your wiring cleanup too!
