2002 MADP engine compartment

Something that I never liked in the engine compartment were the rubber panels on the sides. They are getting old and all the attachment points have failed at some point. A couple weeks ago I ordered new rubber to replace the panels and tonight I removed the old panels.
Now that they are removed I am wondering if this came from the factory like this or was added by a PO. Not sure what the function is, seems like the area behind is just as dirty and full of road debris as the rest of the engine compartment.

And with it removed.

My 96 MADP didn't have that in the engine compartment. Probably PO installed it for some unknown reason.

Dito; my 99 DSDP, could be a PO thought that closing things off would improve cooling .

I think I will just leave the rubber out and clean up the engine compartment and see if anything either gets dirtier or have some sort of cooling issue. I cannot imagine any difference in cooling though.

Mine looked like it had remnants of same rubber. I see some attachment points.
I am assuming it was Newmar and the utility was just to tidy up the engine compartment cosmetically. I don't see any other utility in it.

I am not sure what chassis you're on but could it be one of those fixes for the dust tornado that I think FL created?

Took mine out awhile back. (03MADP) If I were to replace, I would just use a inner tube which I have laying around. I've seen where a person has built cabinets in the new found space and even rearranged the air filter to stand up (vertical) instead of horizontal and attached to the wall. Makes for an easy filter change. Each to his own, I get tired just thinking about all that work.

Typically when you see rubber used like that, it was for cooling reasons. It directed air flow.

I agree 100% with Don, Factory installed.........they direct out the rear vent's on the rear cap........they are inline with the engine compartment and air flows out the rear cap venting..........I have a good draft idling out the vent's on the compartment door. Mine are 19 years old this year, still lookin good. This is the best picture of one side I have.......

Now I am reconsidering going forward with putting in the new rubber. It is already paid for so just need to do some work to install.

Spartan Chassis here, had the "Dust Storm" problem........year's back, thanks to Dutchstar Don, I had the diamond plate made.......dust storm over, and a lot more air flow out the rear cap..........
