2005-2007 Essex

Been looking (online) at the 4502 floor plan, which looks like it would work for us. Have not seen one in person, but may go look at one this weekend.

Are there any key things to be aware of on this model/year range?

I've found a 2005 and a 2006 that appear, from pictures, to be in fairly similar condition, but 50k difference in asking price. Is there any significant difference in these model years?

Thanks for any input you can provide.

Yes The 04 thru 06 Essex had a 2 piece windshield and the awnings were attached to the side of the coach. The 07 Essex had a one piece windshield and the awnings were up on the roof. Made coach look taller and more what Newmar high line coaches of today appear like. We had a 04 Essex for 14 years and drove it over 140K miles. The 04 were over loaded on the front axle with a 14.6 load and 05 they moved up to the 16K front axle which with the 315 front tire was the way to go. All had the great Spartan K2 chassis with the also great 500 ISM no DEF engine. The 07 having the changes I mentioned above will be at a higher price point. All 3 years 05,06, and 07 were great coaches as long as they were serviced regularly. Do be careful of "Checking" which deals with the fiberglass that causes the paint to crack. Major deal if any of these years has it. Only way the repair is to replace side fiberglass and complete repaint. We had our 04 done in 2011 and would have cost almost 50K. Also be careful of coaches that have been sitting for a number of years without being used. Nothing wrong with 100K plus miles as long as it has been serviced and taken care of. Ask for service records.
We now have a 18 London Aire but still remember all the traveling we did in our Essex. Check that everything works and how to operate all systems. If you can find a other knowledgeable owner to take with you that would be great. Do your homework by reading brochures, asking questions and taking a close look at everything on the Essex.

A few more notes:
Although the 05 Essex awning appears to be attached to the side, it is actually attached to massive brackets on the roof and hangs slightly over the side. The 05 had conventional wiring and the 06 and later had an E-plex system (research E-plex), Ours has checking on vertical panels ... I wax it and we ignore it ... it's cosmetic. We like our floor plan.

Had an 04 and 07 Essex. The 07 is loaded coach compared to the older models. Go look at the brochures on Newmar's website. Our 07 has the new CTEC fiberglass so no checking and 07 was the first year for the masterpiece finish. More clear coats and cut and buff

Hmm .... just had a look at 05 and 07 brochures ... not seeing "loaded" vs not-loaded". What differences are you referring to that would make the 07 "loaded"? I've never been in an 04 so can't compare. I do agree the paint is very nice on 07 and later.

I'm not sure what the major differences are either, other than Comfort Drive and the paint.

I just found a local 2006 Essex that looks very nice, and has Comfort Drive. I thought Comfort Drive was a 2007 feature? Regardless, I'll be looking it over later this week.

Nice! Another question... Do they have heated floors?

I don't have ComfortDrive so I don't know if I'm missing something. The 2005 drives fine and the seats are comfortable .... I assume all the Spartan K2 are fine. I don't have heated floors (other than being based in Florida). We have tile floors and use area rugs when the temp gets near freezing (almost never).

BTW .... all of the 2004 thru 2009 or so are probably in need of new A/C units (due to age) so budget for them (all 3 for about $5000 installed). I did all of mine (my labor) and parts/supplies were $3100. I've also done all 4 TVs at $1000.

How did you get to the back of the televisions to remove them? I can't seem to figure it out.

In my 05 they were all different. The basement was fairly obvious. The one over the dining credenza was obvious. The bedroom mirror thing I don't really remember but I think the trim was held with Velcro or silicone sealer. The one over the dash probably required removing the vent from the back (silicone sealer). Usually the trim needs to be separated from the cabinet with a putty knife to cut the silicone. Anywhere you see louvered trim (like the speakers) there is silicone.
Here's my new 32 inch front TV with the cabinet recut and a new upholstered bottom panel. Here is another post on a 06 removal.

As mentioned before research the E-plex system. From what I've read on this forum it's discontinued and there are no parts for it. Also the 07 and newer have the comfort drive. That's what made me get my 08 MADP last February that and no DEF or E-plex on the MADP for my year.

So...Eplex....I read a few of the threads on it....how much of a pain is that going to be to deal with/replace when needed?

Not sure what all has been done on the coach, as I've not gone to see/talk to the owner, but he did have the AC's all rebuilt last year. Is that a long term solution to them, or is replacement still in the future?
