Hi all,

We have found a used 2005 KSDP for sale online and have some questions. It is 34' long, low mileage and on the Freightliner chassis with the Cummins 300 HP engine. It has an 8KW Power Tech diesel generator, a brand we have not heard of. Also, the description does not mention the length of the wheelbase.

We are going to go look at it tomorrow, so any info, opinions, etc. on this MH would be greatly appreciated, especially since we have never owned a diesel.

Thanks in advance.

PT generators are now owned by Cat and the 8 KW is a good unit that has been around for awhile. We have an 02 DSDP with a 8 KW PT. They run @ constant RPM no matter what the load vs. others that vary RPM with load. We like it and the noise level is low.

With the 300 hp I would want at least a 6 speed tranmission vs a 5 speed. The torque will be around 690 Lb. Ft. as I recall. It will be some what on the slow side with respect to accelaeraation but adequate.

Over all the KSDP is on the lower end of the Newmar scale but some of the units are very good. We know folks that are very happy with them.

If it fits your needs than I would seriously consider the unit.

GOOD LUCK

It is an unusual engine in that its torque is constant across the total operating range at 660 lbft. I drove it for 80,000 miles on a 36 ft Discovery towing a Tracker and it performed very well. I lived at 7000 ft and thus traveled a lot of mountain terrain. Yes, it lugs down to 45 or so but it never bothered me.

Bluewind,

We have an 03 KSDP that sounds like it is the same model. (I think I've seen the one you are looking at!). Ours has the closet slide in the bedroom and a living / dining slide on the left side of the coach. We have the Cummins ISB engine (300 hp and 660 tq) with the Allison 6 speed.

If I'm looking at the same one you are on the net then the one you are considering is almost a duplicate of the one we bought.

If so...

I have gone over several passes (yes, it does slow down - but I am towing a Jepp that weighs a little over 4000 lbs) and have not had any issues (other then it overheated on the first trip).

The Power Tech generator probably has a Kubota engine. It will run forever as long as it is serviced regularly and is not over heated.

Overall, if you like camping in state parks and boodocking it is the perfect size. My wife loves the floorplan. I like the floorplan although I would change a couple of things that are minor issues.

If you are going to buy it I would request a service be performed and inspect and operate everything (slides, generator, etc). Also, in addition to looking for damage on the sides, front, rear, and roof, look UNDER the MH. Especially at each corner where you have to get on your knees or crawl under.

If you are going to the dealer I think you are then your purchase experience should be very pleasant. However, if there are issues you want taken care of make sure they are on the purchase agreement and don't sign the papers until they are fixed. It seems they are a little slow on doing things once the unit is off the lot.

When you go there tell Rodney to call me.

Ed
