Hi Fredfsj,
Welcome to iRV2 and the Newmar Owners Forum. This happens to most of us, including me. First a warning. The steps can cause severe injury or death if you are in the way when they deploy. I say this because they do deploy quickly when you are under them.
How are the batteries? One engine and 2 coach batteries. Are they fully charged? The steps are, most likely, powered by the chassis battery. Consider starting the engine and see if the steps deploy.
Consider using the jacks to get the coach as high a possible and then jack stands to support the coach while you are underneath.
With a meter, determine if you have power to the motor. With Newmar, when the door is open the steps should be deployed. It matters not the position of the step switch above the door. An assistant is helpful when making the checks. as you will be under the coach. The assistant can open and close the door. Have the assistant open and close the door to see if there is power to the motor.
1. Consider using a portable car starting battery and some wire to power the step motor. If you connect the wires in the wrong direction the motor will try to move the steps but fail. Just reverse the leads and see if the steps deploy. Be ready to remove power because all the limit switches that stop the steps are being bypassed.
2. If, with power, the motor will not deploy the steps, try lubricating the gears (2). There is one large and one small gear.
3. Lubricate all the pivot points.
4. A rubber hammer is nice to have. A few gentle taps can make the motor come alive.
How cold is it now? Cold can cause the motor to fail, when it is cold. I've used a hair dryer (on high) to warm the motor enough to get it to work.
5. If with portable power the steps deploy and retract, the problem can be in the step switch above the door or any other component in the circuit.
If possible, do nothing to a coach when it is cold. I wait until the weather warms up. It is amazing how many of the failures during cold weather correct themselves when the weather is warm.
If with portable power, the steps will not deploy or retract, the motor is suspect.
