2008 Kountry Star Options Questions?

in reviewing build sheets, have a few questions I hope someone can help with.

Pre-2007 400hp engine discount - what does this mean? any pros/cons? (I am aware of the wrist pin recalls in these engines and how to check if impacted).

KVH R-5 Satellite Dish - pros/cons, works with Dish?

One piece fiberglass roof - pros/cons?

thx!
Vince

Engine discount is a plus, it means it came with out added emissions equipment, and does not require ultra low sulfur fuel. Of course that is all you can get now unless you go to Mexico. The KVH will work fine with Dish. The one piece fiberglass roof is also a big plus. I have those options on my 2008 Kountry Star.

The pre-2007 is lacking the emissions equipment but should have no wrist pin problems. These engines were actually 2006 engines which I believe were changed (chip added to increase hp to 400) and were the last of an inventory when installed in the 2008 KSDP. Only problem I know of is the leaking (warped) exhaust manifold on several and a few leaking head gaskets as mentioned in irv2 in the Cummins engine section.

The KVH is becoming an older satellite and I'm not sure it is supported by KVH any longer. However, there is a string of posts in the technology section of irv2 that includes how to download the flash software and update the satellite if you run into any problems.

Fiberglass vs. Rubber roof...my opinion after having both is that it is a wash. None seems to be better than the other to me. Both are great in a Newmar due to the thick insulation. Cannot hear rain on either.

What is the torque rating of the pre-2007 engine vs. newer engine? The pre-2007 engine was a credit of over $4000.00, so wondering why so?

For the satellite dish, will it work with a Dish 211K receiver?

The torque ratings were 1200-1250 on both pre and post 2007 engines. The $$ differential is the DPF equipment to meet the '07 EPA standard.

My 2008 KS was a $7000 discount for the pre-emissions engine. I think I would have paid $7000 extra for that option. Jim L is wrong about the fiberglass vs rubber roof. How many hi line coaches have you seen with a rubber roof? These are usually seen on less expensive RVs. Fiberglass is superior and maintenance free. I don't know if Newmar was using the Brite- Tek roofs then, but I believe they were standard on the lower end coaches, with a fiberglass being an option.

What's your reasoning behind preferring the '07 EPA compliant engine at an up charge of $7,000? No arguments, just wondering.

What I meant is I would pay $7000 to not have a 2007 compliant engine. Instead I got a $7000 discount, that's a win, win. Who wants all the added weight and expense. I believe the 2007 engines had exhaust gas recirculation and a diesel particulate filter. The newer engines have all this plus the added expense of DEF. KISS. An exhaust pipe and a muffler. I hope this post doesn't upset the tree huggers, because I do care about clean air. I guess I will do my part when I get a new coach, hopefully a DSPS.

2008 Kountry Star Options Questions?

I have the same question for Tucson. It is my opinion that the pre07 engine had better fuel mileage. The Fuel mileage on the EPA engines suffered a little until they started using DEF. On the difference between the rubber and fiberglass roof, I had a rubber (brite trek) roof on my 08 KSDP and paid the extra for the fiberglass on my 14 DSDP and do not see a substantial difference. Still get black streaks. Just my opinion for someone looking at a KSDP which was built 7 years ago. The roof would not be of significant concern to me. I hope this helps the OP

I felt the power to weight ratio of our 2008 39' KSDP with the pre-2007 400HP was amazing. Great coach with either roof.
