2008 Newmar Grand Star

Cummins 340 turbo on the FRED chassis.

I'm in a Discovery here at Laughlin NV when the above rig rolls in next to me. First thing I notice is that the slide just behind the driver does not deploy. Shortly after I see the owner and a couple other guys opening the basements under the slide. Appears the slide is jammed. I stood back & approached the owner shortly afterwards to get the scoop.
Apparently he was having slide issues earlier and the last place that looked at it installed a "more powerful" motor with a brake (black boot). It appears to me that slide is possibly jammed, when in or stowed the forward end of the slide appears to be further in than the rear by about 1/4 inch. I do my own work and my full slide is manufactured by Powergear so i'm not familiar with his slide.
Apparently he is planning to take it back in for the slide issue so I thought I'd ask some questions here.

He told me a story about the Cummind de-rateing and "flashing a bunch of codes" 1st shop visit after being towed in swapped out some parts & sent him on his way. 600 miles later, just outside of Vegas the same thing happens! Low boy hauls him to Freightliner who throws a bunch of parts at it as well including a new turbo! Owner asks to keep the old turbo and was told that they "have to keep it". If the owner wanted the turbo he would be charged $500.00!! Ended up costing him around 10K for the whole ordeal! Guy lives up in Canada so I'm sure it was a big hit on his pocketbook!

I asked him if he frequents ANY RV forums and was told no.

Ideas, suggestions?

$500 core charge on a turbo would be my guess.
Without knowing the codes we really can't help much.

Having replaced a slide motor on our previous Dutch Star MH (that didn't need replacing) I'm not sure what they mean by a "more powerful" motor unless Newmar had one made after experiencing slide problems on some of their rigs. On ours I found that some reinforcing a shop added to the bottom of our slide was catching on the carpet and stalling the motor out. Once I beveled the edge of the board I had no more problems.

The best advice you can provide the owner is always go to a Newmar dealer or authorized service center (call Newmar for locations near you). The same advice for the Cummins. Only an authorized service center for work (call Cummins for location near you).

The more powerful motor is a rip off. Based on the gearing and vintage of the coach, I can open and close a slide with a 1/2" drill. The slide needs adjustment, that is all. There are many different adjustments on a Newmar slide. This is why one needs a tech trained on Newmar coaches.

Thanks for the info. Mr-D
I had thought of the core charge on the turbo.
Who's the mfg. of the slide? I also see some posts about the slide controllers out in the weather.

Gary will pass that on to the owner. Freightliner in Vegas did the work on the Cummins.

Newmar makes their own slides and slide mechanism up until the latest with the HWH system. There were different controllers too, We had two different ones in the Dutch Star, the main one had a voice module in it, the other two didn't and those were both the same.

Hi valland,
Does post #3 answer your question? If not, you are the first member to ever say my posts are "cool".

It does, I'm new to this it seemed like a long way to go to say, Man they ripped you off you need to find some trusted shop. and that's not to say that dealer are trust worthy and won't overcharge if they can get by with it.

Have the owner call Newmar customer service. They may lead the owner thru some basic diagnostics. The misalignment only causes jamming if there is no clearance at all between the slide and the coach opening, and even in that case the motor may start to drive the slide and twist it. if there is no motion at all or the motor does not start at all, there may be some electrical problem. I have seen bad rollers cause slide motion issues mis-diagnosed as motor problems. The "slide in" sensor may have a problem. Are there any LED light lit on the slide controller? Does the coach have electrical slide locks? If not, both slide locks bars have been removed? There are lots of possible failure modes, therefore calling customer service or taking GaryKD's advice are the best options.

Last year the DW opened the living room slide without moving the brief case behind it. Slide was out of alignment pretty bad. Had lots of recommendations on this web site, some talking about 2x 4, sledge hammers etc. scary stuff.

Took it to an authorized Newmar dealer in Tucson, half day, $200 fixed properly.
