2011 Canyon Star 3856 question

We looked at one today...the a/c had two units but one control. Can this be changed and at what cost.
Auto gen start would be needed. What would that cost?

Hi AngusT,
Welcome to the Newmar Owners Forum. It is normal for the coach you are considering to have one HVAC control thermostat. However, that thermostat controls both units separately. There should be a zone 1 and zone 2. Zone 1 is the front unit and zone 2 in the rear unit. It will also control the furnace. This assumes you have a propane fueled furnace. When inspecting the coach look for small 1/2 moon plastic caps coming from the wall. These are the temp sensors that actually measure the temperature in the coach.

I have a similar system and you only need one control to operate both, as mentioned Zones 1& 2 can be set independently, I cannot foresee a need to change the current setup. Why would you want to do this type of modification?

Mine is set up the same way - 2 ACs (w/heat pumps), 1 furnace, 1 thermostat. There is a sensor in the bedroom on a wall that monitors temps in the bedroom. Each zone is set separately on the thermostat. Use the zone button to select 1 or 2. Seems to work well for me. BTW - as there is only one furnace, there is only zone 1 for furnace operation.

x2 for Harleyjt. Ours works the exact same way and seems to do a pretty good job. Sometimes a little less so in extreme temperatures for the a/c. But, overall, we're happy.

As others have stated, that is the standard setup for just about every RV all the up the food chain to million dollar units. Our 2015 Ventana DP has one thermostat that controls the two rooftop AC/heat pumps and the Oasis hydronic heating system.

For the AGS question I am not sure the cost or feasibility to add, but I think it may have some dependency on whether you want it to auto start based upon temperature or battery voltage, or both?
