Is there a switch to keep the steps from retracting every time I close the door?

Should be. On our KGDB, it's in the panel above the driver's seat, labeled "EXT STEP". Flip it up (so the red is showing), and the steps will stay out.

If the engine is running I believe they will always retract unless you disconnect the wiring.

There is a switch in the control panel which lets you retract them when you don't want them extended even when the engine is off. Perhaps this switch is activated in your case when it shouldn't be.

On my Newmar Kountry Star, it is located on the panel with all the switches over the entry door. Open the door and turn the step switch to off, while the steps are extended.

While I can not speak for yours there is one on mine just to the left of the entry door, one of the four switches in a cluster,and looking at others from time to time I've seen the same switch set up.

edit;
I'm such a slow two fingered typist I see a lot better answers to your question in a very short period of time. We both got a lesson.

I forgot to mention about the engine running. Don is right, if it's running, the steps will always come in.

I expect the switch location on an Essex is most likely to be the same place as in the King Aire.
