2013 Mountainaire 4344

I will be picking up a 2013 coach this week with 27,300 miles on it. I have owned a coach since the late 70's. Never a Newmar. My best was a 2007 country coach magna. I spent over 4 hrs going over every thing I could think of on this coach under and on top. Have talked to freightliner and Newmar. I have seen most of the work orders. My question is are there any problems that appear consistently with the Mountainaire that I should be prepared for. I do most of my own upkeep and plan to go the the freightliner school. Also any input on going to this school would be appreciated. I started out set on purchasing a Foretravel but came to the decision that the Mountainaire was a nice coach. Looked for an Essex but just got tired of trying to find one about 3 years old. Was hard to find the Mountainaire. People must get good service out of their units. Thanks in advance for any input.

Congratulations on your new MADP. Welcome to the Newmar family. The only problem I know of with the Mountain Aire is not having enough time to spend in it. Post some pics of it when you pick it up.

The only issue I am aware of is that it has the small 8.9ISL with 450 HP. and only 1250 torque. We were in Lake Tahoe last summer and a Newmar owner came in with a 2014 or 2015 MA and was complaining he was down to 25 mph and a couple grades. We have a Essex with the 500HP but 1550 torque and were never down below 45 mph. In 2016 Newmar put the ISX 12 with 500HP and 1645 torque in the MA. If you don't travel out west much or mountain areas it will be fine. A heavy coach to only have the ISL engine. Great coach just a little under powered.

Correction: In 2015 Newmar put a ISM-10 in the Mountain-Aire. I looked at a 2014 new it had the ISL-9

Thanks for the power of the coach replies. I do drive in the mountains of WV, VA and NC. Rarely out west anymore. One of the reasons I went this route was also the weight issues I read about in the newer dutchstar and I note the capacity of the Mountainaire is not as much as the 2013. I believe the new dutchstar is actually heavier that the 2013 Mountainaire. What have they done to not make all the Dutch stars not be under powered? I truly don't understand the difference in performance in the mountains out west and the east. I lived in Breckenridge,CO for 3 years and my SUV got about 2.75mpg better fuel economy there than it does now living back east. Does this effect apply to diesel also? Those three years, I did not have a coach.

Our 2015 DS weighs loaded a little over 40000 pounds and we tow a 5200 pound Grand Cherokee. I don't think that your Mountain Air is weighing significantly more. We had no problems driving in the mountains in Utah, Arizona and western Colorado. On 10% grades the speed dropped to 35-38 mph but we could keep up and sometime pass other motor homes. I would not worry about the performance. It will get you anywhere with decent mileage.

There most have been other MA owners complaining about performance or Newmar would have not changed the ISL-450 to the ISX -500. MA a great coach but if there is a issue it would be the performance on steep grades. Lakebuster states that a 2015 ISM-!0 was in MA which isn't correct. The ISM -11 was stopped being used in 2010 in all US highways.

The 2015 and newer MA is on a new heavier Freightliner SL chassis and weighs a lot more than the 2011-2014 XCR. The engine change was required by the new chassis.

We had a 2013 Mountain Aire with the 450 cummins. Great motorhome with very few problems, did very well in mountain areas out west. Just have to keep rpm's up when climbing and you will just fine. Had a 2014 Essex built and now wish I had our MA back. Have had many problems and its stays in the shop more than at home.

Nice to hear about few problems with the Mountainaire. I thought that was the case and why I gravitated to it. Real bummer thm 1953 to hear from someone that has a coach in the shop all the time. My current coach is a2012 that I bought new and it has been in the shop constant. That's why I'm buying the Mountainaire. Once you have one breaking down constant you are always thinking something is going wrong. Best of luck to you. The Essex appears to be a great coach.

Congrats on the Mountain Aire. We are really enjoying ours after 8K mi. Wish it did a little better on fuel but who's counting right? I got my best ever mileage coming home from Arizona last week with a slight tail wind. 7.3 MPG on one tank and averaged 6.9 for the 1180 mi. I was ecstatic.

We have had our 2011 MADP 4344 for about a year and a half and about 8500 miles now. We tow a 2010 Tahoe at about 5500 lbs. The power issue is real but as stated just do some manual shifting and keep the RPM`s up to about 2000 and it will do fine. The biggest trouble we have had is the FWS cover. It does not want to roll up at times and now won`t roll up at all. We also had the transfer switch burn up because of bad contacts, the front A/C had to be replaced and a shade motor. Thank goodness for the extended warranty. We travel in the west mostly and get about 6.5 to 7.0 MPG. Overall we are very happy with this MH also check the front seats for wear the flex steel material does not hold up.
