2014 Newmar Essex

According to Jon Steinbring the 2014 Newmar Essex can be ordered with a Freightliner chassis with a Detroit Diesel engine instead of Spartan/Cummins. The passive steering tag axle would be nice, but not worth giving up Spartan/Cummins IMHO.

I don't think I would give up Comfort Drive for a steerable tag.

Good to know
Wasn't in Freightliners chassis specs.
I think I'll still stay with tested and true.

Hmmmmmmmmmm........................A no cost option? Perhaps should be a deduct!

Why on earth would Newmar want to offer a no cost chassis change? They think it is better? Better than what? Spartan? Spartan has been, and still is, the best chassis they ever had. If it ain't broken don't fix it has never been more the right phrase here!

So why the offer? Gotta be the accountants think they can build better rigs than the engineers and marketing can! After all, great no charge option when you pay less for the lower line product.

Well, as you can tell I'm not buying the whole offer. Hopefully they can snow some that do not seek it out, otherwise FL will not get too many orders and Newmar won't have to adjust to too many odd lots.

And I thought the high mounted mirrors were a mistake! Well at least they finally realized it and changed back. So will the FL offering. I wonder how that will affect the sales? "Oh, it's a Freightliner chassis", how many were sold before they were discontinued by Newmar? Oh, oh! The trade-in value just nose dived. No thanks!

Spartan Service is the best. We feel we have great chassis and engine comb. with Cummins. Call Freightliner one time and you will see the difference. They are bigger but not better. Maybe to big to give good service. 04 Essex Tom

WHAT TO DO!, WHAT TO DO!

Now ya got me running scared, Newmar does not have anything on website regarding 2014 Essex, I'm sure they won't have Spartan chassis option.

Newmar will still offer the Spartan K2 and K3 with Cummins on Essex and King Aire. Offering Detroit Diesel is a way to make potential Prevost conversion buyers consider Newmar due to familiarity with DD engines, ie; 2014 King Aire is $902,000, about half the cost of a Prevost conversion, but with the same engine, if wanted.

This link bears out Jeff's comments by the options.
Newmar is still building 2013's by next month info on their web site will make the slow transition over to the 2014 models.
Dealers for there reasons may push FL chassis.

Is $902,000 the base price? The base price on a 2013 KGDB was $778,023 in Mar, 2012. That's quite a jump in price for one year.
