2015 DS batteries not charging while driving

Apparently my coach batteries haven't been charging while driving. Never really noticed because the batteries take care of the inverter for the 2-5 hours we're driving.

I called Newmar and they suspected a charging coil(?), saying that it's a part located behind a panel in the power bay?

Opinions? Has this happened to you before?

Thanks!

It often happens. Its a isolation relay ( solenoid ) that connects the chassis battery to the house battery under charging conditions.

Find it by having someone push the boost switch on and off, while listening for the clunk. ( The boost solenoid is also the isolation solenoid )

Once located, if its a Big Boy type, it can be opened up and the internal contacts can be cleaned. If its a sealed type, you need to replace it.

Thought I had the same issue. The PCM system senses battery charge and will not throw a charge until needed. Itís not a simple on / off relay.
I have a BMK sensor on my batteries, so I can see the charge going to the bank. Only when I dry camp do I see the engine alternator charge the bank. Seems like a SNAFU.

On my 2014 DS I have a battery isolation manger. B.I.M. located in my power cord bay. It works by connecting the house and engine batteries. When engine is running alternator charges engine batteries and when there voltage reaches 13.4 volts the BIM will latch connecting house batteries for 15 minutes then unlatch for 20 minutes and so on. If there is no voltage flowing and battery reaches 14.4 volts BIM will not latch and connect house and engine batteries. When plugged into shore power BIM charges house first then engine. Newmar can provide a email on how the BIM works to keep for your records.

Hi Mike!

Here’s the one used in 2016...I think the 2015's had the same.

Precision Circuits and Intelletec both make bi-directional relays... So, it could be either.

Our model has been replaced with a new device, which looks different...but does the same thing.

Here’s a link to the page and you can download the troubleshooting guide there...

Here’s a link to the replacement...if you need one.

or for fancy LiFePO4 house banks...

Not a fan of that one yet..
