2017 Canyon Star

I am considering a 2017 Canyon Star. We currently have an older 2005 Diesel which pulls our toad fine. My question is will the Ford engine be a big let down? We do go west every winter and cross the mountains in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona with no problems now. How have any current Canyon Star owners found the gasser to be?
Thanks for your help!

I am not sure the size canyon star your looking at, but I can tell you
that my bay star sport has no problem towing a ford escape on a dolly. We
have been all through the Colorado Rockies.

You'll have no problems.

I have a '13 3911. Tow a Dodge Grand Caravan. Only upgrade is a 5 Star Tune.

Have you been happy with you motor home and would you buy again? I am not sure about going from diesel.

Never had a diesel, so have no basis for comparison.

I have a 2017 Canyon Star 3710 and it tows my Jeep Unlimited without a problem. I have never owned a diesel, but from reading posts here might want to consider adding an ant-sway bar to close in on the handling you have experienced with the diesel. We love the coach and thoroughly pleased with it. Newmar CS has treated us well. That said it is truly a quality product.

I never owned a diesel but have driven my Canyon Star from east coast to west coast and back without a problem. Although I did not tow a car, to me it had plenty of power and it is well built. With regards to gas powered coach Newmar is at the top of the list.

I just posted a you tuber's comparison of gas vs diesel on this site on another thread. Here is the link:
Gas vs Diesel Insights

Hope this helps.

We have a new 3710 and tow a Wrangler, although we have not taken it through the Rockies we have done a trip into the Smokies. It tows great in the flats, going up a grade like the Saluda Grade on I-26 (6% grade for 3 miles up Howard's Gap)the coach does slow down to about 50 and that is with a little running start.

We have never had a diesel so I can't compare, I would suggest the five star tune if transversing mountains often.

The tune is on my to do list.

Other than a mountain grade we couldn't be happier with our Newmar gas coach!

We went from a 2002 Dutch Star DP to our 2017 Canyon Star 3953.

I tow a 2015 Ford Fiesta (2500k+ lbs.)

You will not have a problem towing in the mountains - but you will be a slower than the diesels. You will lose low end torque. Driving on flat surfaces, I have hit 75mph towing and had to slow myself down.

You will not have a problem with engine noise - although you'll know when the engine downshifts - seems to be the BIG reason people give for not to buying a gasser after owning a DP......not for us!

Handling is much better than my old diesel.

We did add the 5 Star Tune - worth it.

We also added Sumo Springs Maxims front and rear. We did not like the roll feeling when making turns. Fixed it!! My diesel with the air bag ride also had a roll.

I like the simplicity of my Canyon Star chassis versus a diesel. 7 quarts of oil versus 20+ quarts and many more living parts..

We are very pleased, I am happy to say, with the CS.

It works for us.

Good luck

We also went through the Smokies on I-24, hit a 6% grade at Monteagle, TN and went down to 50mph.......not problem, I stayed with the trucks. If I pushed the engine, I could have gotten few more speed but why?

That was an interesting video. I couldn't see which gas coach they had.

I have been following this couple on their sailing videos. This was the first RV video I watched by them.
