2017 Dutch Star 4369 & 16000 Water Softener

Is there enough height in a bay to mount an On-The-Go 16000?

Has anyone mounted one in a 43' Dutch Star?

I assume the 16000 must weigh about 45lbs with water in it & I really don't want to deal with lugging in & out at every top. Am I wrong about how heavy it is?

I have one, and its pretty heavy. Right now I lug it in and out of the one bay without a tray, but it is too tall to fit on the FWS side so its a long walk around. Unfortunately its too big in diameter to fit into the water bay, so I've purchased an 8000 model which appears will fit. Not sure how I'm going to install/mount yet, but it does seem to have a couple of options. Maybe someone will come up with other options for us.

I have the 8,000 and it lays on its side in a bay. I don't use it all the time, just when the water tests hard. The DW doesn't think it's heavy.

Did not know you could lay them in their side. That could solve my problem! I have been trying to figure this out for a while. I also don't want to take it in and out all the time, especially in cold weather. The unit operates with no issues?

I think you can store them on their sides, but I don't think you can USE them that way.

I carry mine in the toad, I put a shallow tray in the footwell behind the driver's seat, set the unit there, and hold it in place with some bungee cords. When we set up I lug it out and set it up, but at least it's already on the correct side of the coach. I bought a collapsible hand truck thinking I could use that, but most of the time the place I set it up is on grass or gravel so you still have to lug it around some.

Just confirmed with the manufacturer. Storage on side is OK, but use only upright.

not exactly sure, but the unit has an advertised weight of 32 pounds and a capacity of 0.5 cubic feet. A half a cubic foot of water weighs ~30 pounds, but this space in the unit is taken up almost completely with resin. Therefore I'm going to guess about 40 pounds total weight. My new 8000 grain unit weights 18 pounds dry, and by the same logic I'm going to guess 20-25 pounds wet. Anyone want to buy a gently used 16000 grain unit?!?

They have to be used upright. and that's where the problems come in. The Watts Pro1000 measures 21' in height and that is very tight. It won't fit in my water bay. I take it out to use it. Yes it is heavy to get back into the storage bay. Bigger doesn't mean better it just makes a difference in how often it has to be regenerated.

Stuart, I have a 2016 Dutchstar 4369 on a Freightliner chassis and in my coach, there is enough room to mount a 16000 grain water softener in the driver's side bay adjacent to the house battery compartment. You have to angle the unit to get it in, but there is head room once you are past the door. See the PDF file below.

The water softener is secured with a steel band to the vertical post adjacent to the frame rail. The 6' braided steel hoses allow me to backwash, flush, and regen the unit in place using external hoses for now.

2017 Dutch Star 4369 & 16000 Water Softener

Oh! This looks very interesting! Please tell us about how you've plumbed this into the wet bay (diagram?) and where you obtained the braided hoses (washing machine hoses with extra brass fittings on the softener end?) as well as those fittings (hose bibs?) that link them to the plastic lines going rearward. Also that's a pretty nice job of mounting the valves -steel plate screwed in somewhere? Finally does your method of plumbing somehow obviate the need to open the top to add the salt to the unit? Ever consider an actual residential style bypass slider valve?
