2017 trip

Planning trip to the Northwest from Texas. Think I can get to Fork, WA where plan to stay three weeks, then into BC. After BC back down through Glacier National Park on down to the International in Sedelia.
Plan to leave about July 6. Three weeks in Washington, Three to four weeks in BC.
The help I need is where to stay and what to do in BC and on the way back Any thoughts would be appreciated.

What are you planning to do in Forks, WA for 3 weeks? I'd suggest a week to explore that side of Olympia Nat'l Park and then move to the Port Townsend area to explore the park from that direction. Fort Worden State Park is a beauty and good for big rigs.

Might want to go see the San Juan Islands. The vampires in Forks have left the building.

If you are that close you might want to go into Alberta and check out Banff and Lake Louise.

Don't go anywhere near interior of BC or Alberta until at least end of April unless you like snow skiing. Oh and BTW if you pack guns make sure you leave them in a safe box on the US side of the border until you return. Otherwise the Cdn Customs will sieze them. Wife and I have an ATF Form 6 that allowed us to bring our pistols down here but no reciprocacy from Canada for that.

For three weeks in BC do Calgary for a night on way to Banff Nat'l Park, stay in the park if possible but reserve early to do so. Banff has great hiking and a cute town. While there travel the Bow Valley Parkway up to Lake Louise which is gorgeous and great wildlife along the way. Then take Ice Fields Parkway, stopping at the Icefields Glacier, worth taking the CAT out to the glacier, we stayed overnight but not necessary. Then on to Jasper National Park with more great hiking. We stayed at Jasper at KOA because we couldn't get into park. All of those areas have great wildlife viewing, especially if you're willing to get out at dawn!

Most all know the beauty of the Banff/Jasper area. Nice park in Canmore (Spring Creek is the name I think) that Fantasy Tours use as a base to depart from. It works well to do day trips throughout the region; try the back road West of Canmore that parallels a very large lake and circles back to Canmore. A word to the wise, when traveling to see the Lake Louis area, arive BEFORE 10 AM. After, you'll have trouble finding parking and walk quite a ways to get to either of the two lake attractions in that area.

Last Summer, we went to Hyder Alaska to see the Bear Creek viewing area. In season (after 15 Jul, but best in mid-Aug), bears come down to feast on the salmon that come up to spawn in these waters. It isn't the bear in the middle of the rapids kind of experience, but you will be on a viewing stand no more than 30 feet from the bear (black and grizzly). Stayed at a campground in Stewart. The road to Stewart had some amazing glaciers as does the Banff/Jasper drive (and both more and better than Glacier Nat Park, JMHO).

That said, as you plan, fuel when you can in Canada...not a lot of truck stops you are used to seeing in the US. WE also saw few RV parks on some of the highways, and virtually no dry camping opps (as the rest areas are clearly marked for no overnight stays and patrolled), that were suitable for 40'+ big rigs. So plan your stops and stays carefully in BC. This was less of a problem in Alberta and Eastern BC.

Cclee and DSL said it pretty good. Firstly when are you going? And in Canmore there is a municipal campground in town by the highway but not all spots are big rig accessible. If you are there during school times spots are fairly easy to get if you start your stay there on a weekday. Not sure how long you can stay for. That will take care of your Banff area camping. If you stop at Columbia Icefields on the parkway to Jasper, make sure you have a few boards to level the coach with as someone who designed the wonderful paved lot never made one square inch of it level. If you have a park pass (you should) then just go down the far corner and setup there. I stay there, when passing through, overnight and never get hassled. Don't ask they will say no! Jasper has NP camping almost in town. I prefer to stay, in private camps, to the east in Hinton and drive back in the car to the park. There is some nice hot springs way up in the hills in Jasper park. Don't attempt that road with the coach! Called Miette Hot Springs. From Hinton you can parallel the Rockies by taking the route to Grande Cache, Grande Prairie. Beautiful scenery. At Grande Prairie you can go to Ft St John which is near the start of the Alaska highway. Wife and I use a program on iPad that is called Allstays which is a fuel, shop and campground guide for USA and Canada. It is nice to have as is a good road map as well.
Good luck and always be a happy camper.
