The Sony SmarTV has “Screen Mirroring” installed in the OS already. Alas, this is NOT compatible with Apple devices, whether OS or iOS.
So, putting an AppleTV into the HDMI port of the TV is an awesome way to not only play content online, but ALSO connect you Apple devices through Airplay. This allows you to not only “Mirror” whatever is on your mobile or laptop screen but, in the case of services like YouTube, you can use the player’s screencast icon to send the signal to the AppleTV which then uses its built in YouTube app while still letting you use your iPhone as the “remote”. It’s really, REALLY slick!!!
The bummer is, you need to have these devices sitting on the same network since they don’t have the ability for DIRECT WiFi connection without a network.
