While pulling a grade and shifting down the heat gauge will go to 210. Have had the radiator flushed, thermostat replaced & the the debris blown out on the cores. This is a side mount with instant hot water at your hot water tank. The temperature wiil run 180 to 190 on flat ground.
This is a 2000 Dutch Star that I purchased new. Thanks for any help.

Firstly is the transmission manual or automatic? If auto then sometimes downshifting and running in a lower gear will cause the torque converter to not lock but to continue to shear tranny fluid. This effectively increases torque but by adding tremendous heat to your tranny fluid. If there is a tranny to radiator heat exchanger the added heat from the tranny is added to the coolant. Perhaps modification to the tranny to allow lock up in a lower gear will prevent this. But this is a guess. It could also just be the radiator is undersized.

There are a lot of variables unacounted for

What are you pulling
What is the grade of the hill how long
what is you speed and rpm's at the start
what gear and rpms are you at in the hill climb

20 degree increase is not a whole lot when clmbing a hill. 210 degrees is well under overheating.

I agree with "Ironman" - 210 isn't overheating when climbing. I don't see a problem here?

Hi tomandboots,
My Cummins ISC 330 will got slightly higher than yours, when pulling a long grade. This is especially true in Summer, when the outside temp is high. Based on the information in the OP, I see nothing out of the ordinary.

I have the predecessor engine C8.3L. The thermostat range is 185 degrees to 203 degrees. It is only fully opened at 203 degrees. The engine will shut down at approximately 225 degrees.

Perhaps your thermostat is rated similarly?
