5.5 Onan Generator Power

Hello All

Looking at a 2015 CS 3610. Has a 5.5 onan gen. Onan 5.5 gen spec says 48.8 amps. Coach is 50 amp. Onan spec says it will run one 13.5 ac.

Question: has anyone used both ac's on generator. Knowing of course we would have to limit the use or not use other counter top & major appliances.

Has this been an issue for anyone?

Thank you all.........David

48 amps will run 2 ACs. The 5500 has 2 outputs, a 30 for most stuff and a 20 for the second AC along with a few other things.

Just as a point, 50 amp service is actually 50 amps @240 volts or 50 amps X 2 @ 120 volts, for a total of 100 amps.

You may never draw that much but when they jumped from 30 amp 120 volt RVs, they went big. Now big RVs can run 3 ACs and everything else.

We routinely ran both A/C's on the generator on our Canyon Star. Newmar usually specs the 5.5KW generator with two 25A breakers and parallels them at the transfer switch.

*Always good to get real life experiences. I questioned the 5.5 gen after reading onan spec's that said it was good for only one (1) 13.5 ac. That's why I asked the question. Very much appreciate your knowledge and reply's.....David

I have to be strategic with my 2016 CS or it trips the breaker on the generator. I have two 30amp breakers and based on life experience it appears nearly everything in this coach is wired to the first breaker and nearly nothing is tied to the 2nd breaker; http://www.irv2.com/forums/images/smilies/banghead.gif except my rear AC unit. So... I have to maker sure the fridge and H2O tank are on propane before I fire up the front AC...

Yes......

Have run with ACs, fridge, lights, Fantastic fans, tvs, etc.

Have not tried using the microwave - but figure the energy management system would kick in if I did.

And i would not think it would have to be limited use, but would need to watch BIG draw items (micro-hair dryers) If you have a residential refrigerator, it, along with the tv(s) have little draw and will be fine. Lights are LED....

I was a little suspect of the 5500 genset when I bought our CS as I had a 7500 in my older DP previously.

Full disclosure: We do not boon-dock and use the genset to keep things going either while traveling, or for periods when it is not feasible to be plugged in.

It works for us. Good luck.

You may want to check the load center and see if both AC's were each placed on each side of the load center buss's at one time they were both placed on the same buss which naturally caused problems.
