Newmar has used dual tandems on their upper end London Aire and Mountain Aire fifth wheels for many years. I think they started with that configuration back in the 90's.

they started using tandem axles with dual wheels on the 98 models. Before that they used a triple axle setup with single wheels. Triple axles were still available as an option I believe yet in 98. Triple axles do help carry the RV across pot holes as an advantage but are a PIA when it comes to backing up as front and rear axles "scuff" the tires

Well, the 40' unit has a GVW of 20,000 lbs, yet the axles are only rated at 9,000 lbs. each. Does the 40' have three axles?

Doesn't need them. Some of that weight goes on the hitch pin. 10%, it looks like.

I think I'm spending more time at parks with a lot of 5ers than you are.
I'm not sure what percentage is supposed to go on the hitch plate. Those numbers come out to 10%, but I thought I read somewhere it's supposed to be 20%. I guess there's just some margin there in case the trailer is balanced wrong.

Joe's a smart guy. He didn't go to school just to ride the bus.

Our '05 Mountain Aire fiver has a GVWR of 20k and dual wheels on two 9k axles. Last time I weighed it had 20.8% pin weight, 13,620 on the axles, 3,580 on the hitch, 17,200 total. The duals make for really stable towing.

I think the spec's in general call for 15 to 25% pin weight. Yours is perfectly in the middle.
