New to forum and have been reading various posts. I am looking at replacing the starter since it will not turn generator over. Generator can be rotated with allen wrench. All grounds have been cleaned along with cable connections. I have replaced starter solenoid & circuit board as fuel pump would not run. Now solenoid works along with pump. New batteries were installed and voltage @ generator is 12.7 with chassis motor running 14.3. Using switch at generator fuel pump runs and solenoid clicks. Starter is almost impossible to get to. I was able to tighten connection from solenoid at starter about 1/4 turn. By looking at connection with a mirror connection looks clean. Removing this generator looks like a bear. Has anyone ever cut an access hole to starter in the pan that generator is mounted too for removal? Our MA is a 94 34 ft. The generator is an Onan 4000. Starter acted the same when we bought MA but with engine running gen. would finally make a connection and take off, figured it was just the batteries and connections. Any ideas? tks

Have you checked the Forum "RV Systems & Appliances"
Lots of Onan info and links.
I have had problems with my gen. but the starter has not been one of them. The website for Onan gen. is Cummins Onan on the web site you can enter your location, it will list the closest dealer or service.

New starter arrived today and is installed. Thanks for input and guidance. I ended up not removing the generator as it would have to be dropped down. Decided to just try removing starter in place and not cutting any holes as it appeared in some of the pictures that would interfere with the rubber mounts on the generator. In removing the starter I removed the control panel as I was not sure where the lead from the solenoid to the starter traveled. Once this was figured out using mirror, lights and jiggling of wire, I removed the nut off of starter wire. I then moved onto removing the 2 bolts that held starter in place. The nuts fell off of backside of housing but were retrieved with magnet. With a little jiggle and a pull by hand starter came out. Starter was bad as could barely turn it. New one ordered making sure I had the correct replacement using #'s off of old starter. In re-installing my son helped as he is a little more agile than I (anyway that's what I let him think) To hold starter bolt nuts in housing I used carpet tape as it was stickier than my duct tape. Applied small amount of anti-sieze to new starter housing and got out of the way other than to give small helpful hints to son. It took all of 45 minutes to completely re-install new starter and control panel. I did remind my son to make sure we had removed tape. This appeared to be the original starter. All is well now, she cranks right over and starts easily. Put load on generator using flood lamps on outside receptacles and running the blower on A/C. Thanks again to all.
