A/C Removal

Has anyone removed their A/C from the roof for replacement of the gasket or other reasons? Wondering how the wires are disconnected. I see a junction box under the A/C and am not sure if all wiring goes in and out of that box.

I thought I was last month. Found the leak and fixed it. I did take pictures of everything before I started to diagnose the problem. Had to pull both capacitors to check, etc. Looked like everything was pretty well unplug the replug. The pictures helped alot.

Assuming your 2005 has original stuff, the J-box has the 120vac connections. The comm cable, furnace wires, etc are separate. While you have the unit off check the metal tape on all ductwork. At about 8 years the adhesive begins to fail and the tape gets loose.

Where is the tape? Is that something you see once the A/C is removed? Are the comms cable, etc. plug and play or are they tied in somewhere that they can be marked and removed?

The tape is obvious ... it closes all the ductwork seams. Looks like duct tape except it is metal.

Some of the wires are plugin and some are wire nut.

The gasket set for a Newmar is not standard ... there is an extra gasket (sometimes called a dogleg gasket).

The Tel plug wires plug into the control unit for AC , 120 Wire in junction box and tape is stuck to duct in your ceiling to the roof surface so your cold air doesn't escape into your ceiling space, new foam seal will direct cool air into ducts in ceiling length of coach and return air will be one of them.

Here is a link to some pictures I took while replacing the units on our 2008 Canyon Star. Hopefully they can make some of the answers above clearer.

Also 007 has manuals and Newmar-specific information in his Quick Tips 1&2 sections, search in these threads for "AC's" or "heat pump".

Thanks for all the responses and for the photos (Luv2go), they are very helpful. I have two of the gasket sets directly from Newmar, just not sure if I am up to the task any longer as it seems the bigger and heavier the item, the less ability I seem to have to work on it.

Why did you remove your A/C, were you replacing the gasket or did you have another issue.

It's not an easy task ... each unit weighs 75lb and needs to be lifted and set to one side.

Just purchased 2005 Mountain Aire gasoline version. While inspecting the heat pump units on roof, they appear to have circular spacers under them between the unit and the roof. They appear to be deteriorated. Does anyone know what these are and where to get replacements if needed?

Not sure about the "round" but Dometic A/C units have rubber blocks under the corners.

Buy the kit straight from Newmar, thatís what I did. The kit includes the extra pieces needed for the duct sealing and small foam spacers. There is also a Newmar document you should download on the seals and installation.

If you do remove the unit, can you photograph the process?

A/C Removal

The first picture is the bottom configuration of the Penguin II A/C unit. The second is the Newmar specific gasket which youíll need to get from Newmar. P/N 52715.

Need 1 per unit at about $7.00 each. Get 2.
