A Little Silverleaf/Heat Pump Replacement Knowledge

Our Zone 2 heat pump/AC unit had failed, unit would run but no heat or cold air. I had a Mobile Tech come to the garage and verify the unit had failed (secondary heat exchanger Freon leak with oil puddled on the roof). So a new Dometic Penguin 1500 was placed on order. Dometic stated I would need the "retrofit, 'read' old style" electronics board to make the unit compatible with the Silverleaf System (the board makes the new Dometic heat pump unit compatible with the "old style" Dometic thermostat). Technician arrived with the new unit. First thing he did was replace the electronics board per the Dometic instructions. We then installed the new unit on the roof. I fired the system up in "fan" mode and NOTHING! I started zones 1 and 3 and they operated, zone 2 was dead! The Tech called Silverleaf and then Dometic. We knew we were in trouble when the Dometic Help Line representative didn't know what a Silverleaf was... My Mobile Tech looked at the heat pump we had removed, the electronics board on the failed unit had 10 dip switches... The "retrofit" board had 8 dip switches... the new electronics board, he had removed, had 10 dip switches... I think you can see where this is going! The Tech reinstalled the original board and the zone 2 system fired right up! Now for the "knowledge", if you have to replace a Dometic heat pump AND your Coach has the Silverleaf System, LOOK at the electronics board BEFORE you order the replacement unit! If the board has 10 dip switches you do not need the retrofit board, your system will operate with the "new" Dometic electronics board.

Got thinking I should add photos of what I'm referring to... Sometimes I forget that everyone might not be familiar with PC Boards...

The first photo is of the CURRENT PC Board delivered on the CURRENT Dometic Penguin 1500 heat pumps...

If your coach has the Silverleaf System this IS the configuration you want... NOTE the 10 DIP Switches.

The second photo is of the "retrofit PC Board", this is the board that Dometic said I required to communicate with the Silverleaf system...

This is the board you do not require to communicate with your Silverleaf system. Note the 8 DIP Switches.
