Wow! Newer is not always better. My "old" Glendinning simply pulls the 50A cord in and deposits into a nest below the unit. The cord attaches directly to the ATS with no rotary contacts. Not as space efficient, but much more robust. The idea of rotary contacts is troublesome as others have noted. With a loose wire somewhere, the result is what you experienced, or worse. I like the idea of a power retrieval, but could probably live without it if this were the consequences.

After replacing transfer switch on my 2012 essex it turns out the power cord reel is bad.
looks like i am not alone with this problem and i agree the thing should hold up better than this, not like it is in use daily.
To bad newmar can't get a reel manufacture that stands behind their equipment.
i now have a direct connect to transfer switch and will leave it like that as it is a big problem to have a power loss @9:00 pm in 90 degree temps and i am not sure i want to buy another one of these till they address the quality issues.
maybe a class action would get reel manufacture to see why their reel does not hold up.

This post has jinxed me! I had my spool replaced under warranty last year and now it has failed again today!
I found that manually rotating it a bit I have power but I am sure this is a bad sign of things to come. I will most likely be direct wiring this power connection.

Normally on modern coaches power from both SHORE and GENERATOR comes into an automatic transfer switch
(Optionally generator power goes to an outlet you plug the shore cord into,, I call that a poor man's transfer switch)
Possible sources of tribble
1: IF plug is not original (Shore plug) wires loose inside
1B even if it is original molded on they may have messed up
2: Screws loose in OUTLET end of cord (Applies only to detachable cords)
2b: And Motor home inlet (like a)
3: Loose wires Transfer Switch incoming or outgoing
4: Bad transfer switch
and the very biggest one: The MAIN breakers on your power panel.
You said you checkd them but DID YOU CYCLE THEM.. I have seen breakers look set but really are tripped more times than I can count.. TOUCH is a good way to tell, VISION is not.
Oh and on edit.. If you have a Surge Guard such as a Progressive Induristies EMS or a Surge Guard brand....that can do it too.

The inverter can cause the ac shore power to go out. I just went thru this last week, the tech days yes it can, don't understand why, I reset shore power was good. I think the inverter does more than just invert, ?

Your inverter is probably a inverter/charger, with 3 stage charging. If your charger goes into bulk stage and your plugged into a 15 amp shore power it might overload the circuit. That would be the only reason I can think of as to why it would have any effect on shore power. It shouldn't knock out power if your plugged into 30 or 50 amp power.

I lost short power several weeks ago, tried everything, reset converter worked perfect, talk to the Newmar tech and said yes it will shut shore power off, can't say why but it absolutely did.

AC Power interruption
Apparently Glendinning has figured this one out. It was a problem with some of their reels made in 2013/2014. When I called them last week with the same issues as Alan1, they immediately shipped out a new reel to a local distributor who installed it on Saturday. Problem solved. When I asked Glendinning what they did to fix the problem, they indicated that they beefed up some of the components and improved contact specs.... I am a happy camper.

My Glendinning reel also failed within the first 12 months and Newmar replaced it with another Glendinning. My last coach had a Shorepower reel and it failed after about 6 years of full timing. If you think about it, a LOT of current has to pass through that brush and leaving it in one spot for long periods of time can set your reel up for failure, no matter what the brand. While not the be-all, end-all, I try to rotate my reel periodically when camped in one spot for a long time. I guess the alternative is to lug that heavy cable in and out each time we set up....
