Adjusting the FWS on a 2017DS
At our factory visit in September we had Newmar adjust the FWS to take some of the slope out of the floor. In order to do this they had to tilt the slide in at the top. At the time the tech said that the slide was about as tight as possible at the top. The day after we left the factory we hit a rough section of road and the slide began to screech at us from the top drivers side corner. Since then I have tried every type of lub on the seals with zero results.
Seems to me that a simple 1/8” adjustment would fix the problem but Newmar CS is reluctant to give me any info on a diy adjustment. It can’t be that big of a deal if you are mechanically inclined. Anyone tried it or has info or a manual that shows how to perform small adjustments? I am not close to a certified dealer that I trust to work on the coach.

I too thought that there should be a simple adjustment, NOT so. After I witnessed CS make a small adjustment on mine last September, it is not a DIY task. Yes they installed the adjustable arms/links but they are not a simple adjustment. It is not like a turnbuckle or threaded rod, it is much more involved. I am not shy about DIY jobs on the coach, this is just something I would not tackle. Besides, if you were to make an adjustment and then bring in the slide and perhaps take out your ceiling or damage the box opening, you would be in a whole world of trouble.

I had the same problem after Newmar replaced the HWH arms to correct the sloping floor. Slope was corrected, but a squeak, more like tapping a pencil on a wooden desk nearly drove me crazy. Took it back for re-adjustment, but that did not eliminate the noise. (Newmar couldn't find the source of the noise).
In order to replace the arms, they had to remove the front fascia trim on the entire slide and modify the backer board. Suspecting the wood trim, I began removing each piece of trim up the front column and across the top of the slide (to the mid point) thinking I could find the culprit, since it sounded like wood-on-wood. After removing all the trim, still had the squeak. Finally figured out that the backer board (1/2" plywood) at the top of the slide was the culprit. I could pull it down and push it up and replicate the squeak. This is the board that the trim attaches to. Newmar had to modify this board for the new arms.
I shimmed the board tight and added a couple of wood screws holding it tight to the horizontal top of the slide. Noise gone.
Re-installed all the trim using my pin nailer. Can't tell it was ever removed and the problem is solved. Have since traveled 3,000 miles without a recurrence.

Thanks dms I think I will place your fix in PROBLEM SOLVERS in QT's # 3 maybe Newmar will pick up your post and resolve the problem, its not the first time owners have fixed something, Newmar didn't.

I have checked the wood backing. My noise is more like a metal on metal squeal...and REALLY LOUD!

When you go outside with the FWS closed how tight, THE REVEAL, is the top of slide to the sidewall frame do you have same space as you do on sides of FWS?

The reveal is pretty much even all the way around. That has never changed. The squeal started when the slide was adjusted tighter into the coach on top.

Jerry.....There are three arms on the slide. To correctly adjust the slide, you would most likely need to adjust all three arms so they stay aligned with each other......a big task.
I would get a ladder and look at the top of the slide where you're hearing the squeak and look for some metal on metal polishing, indicating a rub spot. It might be as simple as a sharp edge, rivet or screw rubbing.
Side Note.....On occasions where I get an uneven campground and I know I have to be careful with the slide coming in, I bring it in and let it trip the locks like I would normally do. After I'm done breaking camp, I'll pull the coach out to a level spot, still within the campground, and extend the slide about 6" and then bring it back in. I find that this eliminates any rattles or noise from the slide. I rarely have to do this, but I always try to do it on really unlevel sites.

DSD,
I have been up there a dozen times. No metal on metal, no protruding screws etc. have tried baby powder, silicone, light oil, everything. Have also tried your suggestion of putting the slide out a bit and back in after moving to level ground. Sadly nothing has worked to date but thanks for trying to help.
