Adventures of Newbee - is that your microwave door or ...
OK I can't be the only one with this issue. Newmar said, never heard of it.
I have a whirlpool microwave in a 2016 VTDP 3725. On a bumpy road when going uphill the door opens. We kept hearing loud bangs when braking or going down hill. Our previous microwave door actually fell off so this is the second one. On our way out to the RALLY we kept hearing the sound of a door slamming so DW keep an eye on the microwave. Bumpy road coming into Williams AZ door opened three times in 5 miles. Yes we do have pictures so it's true.
Will contact Newmar for a fix. Has anyone had this issue? Newmar tech said not to self fix so they could get statistics. How many of you fixed this yourself instead of getting fixed in warranty? Thanks

I had the same problem. The glass turntable fell out, shattered and cracked a porcelain floor tile. Microwave would also turn on when I pressed on the door handle. Newmar replaced the whole microwave with a new one and fixed the floor. I still use a piece of velcro on the door when traveling just to be safe.

interesting
We had this happen on our last trip, my husband hit a bumpy road and the door flew open and turntable fell out. I assumed someone didn't shut door all the way. Didn't know this was an issue I did put a dent in our floor as well. Who did you call at Newmar to get it fixed?

We have a '16 Bay Star w/ a Whirlpool convection microwave (model WMH76719CB). Looking in COMNET2 they use the same microwave, but in stainless, for most of the '16 Ventana's. Regardless, we are at Newmar this week for warranty work.
We have the same issue (door popping open) and when we told the techs here, they said they have a fix. The basically attach a 'latch' to the bottom of the door. It's almost like a drawer latch. You don't have to do anything to 'use' it, just pull the door open harder and push harder to close it.
So you should be able to have your fav. service place contact them to find the part. I would post a picture of the latch and install now but they have the coach in the paint bay! I'll also wander over to parts in a few minutes and see if I can find the matching latch/part number for you if desired.

Had the same problem and asked about a remedy when in Nappanee in May. The tech showed me their "fix" of attaching a drawer catch. I passed, as this would mean yanking the door on every use of the microwave.
The door is of poor design with a weak hinge and 2 plastic catches that trip a switch to ensure the door is closed before turning on the magnetron.
I installed a short 1" button strap to the lower right hand door bottom. We only secure the snap when ready to travel. This eliminates having to yank the door on every use.
When back at the factory last week for other reasons, the tech had the appliance tech install a re-designed hinge bracket to beef up the door. Obviously, Whirlpool has realized the poor door design and has a fix. Now, the door is solid with no play. Still need the snap, however.

I made the snap using 1" wide webbing and a convertible top button snap. I had the snap kit however inexpensive kits are available at Lowes and Home Depot.
Cut webbing about 2", then burn the ends to prevent fraying. Fold over one end and attach the button, per kit instructions. Leave about 1/4" for a thumb tab.
Remove the MW screw under the unit and install the strap using the same screw. Next, locate the position on the door bottom where the snap will marry tightly to the snap base. Drill a hole in the door for a screw to fasten the snap base. The door is hollow and the added screw will not interfere with the door. Look at the inside of the door and you will see. Position the snap base very tight, as the poly webbing will stretch just a bit at first.
Been using this snap now for 4 months and it works great and eliminates having to yank the door open with Newmars drawer catch. Even when unsnapped, the webbing strap is not visible under the unit unless you stoop over and look for it.
Our pre-flight checklist now includes "MW snapped?", along with closet and shower door.

Thanks. I think the latch would be a hassle and is a tacky fix. Will be hitting up Newmar for a fix at the rally. The door seems to have gotten a little twisted from the slamming.
I am thinking there are a lot of Newmar owners that fix things themselves instead of going to Newmar. We appear to be a resourceful group

I guess I need to start doing some test rides in DP's.
I've never ridden in a 8/10 airbag MH.
I was hoping the "air" ride would be more than good enough to keep doors from opening.

BTW, the hinge bracket retrofit by Whirlpool is to eliminate the slop in the door. Ours also became sloppy due to weak hinge design, thus the added reinforced bracket. Now the door is tight with no slop with the addition of the new bracket, but we still snap the door to avoid it popping open on bumpy roads.
Even the air ride won't eliminate the earthquake on a very rough road.

they should have a warning
It dawned on me that everything else, dishwasher, refrigerator, shower door all have locks to make sure they do not open. Why not the microwave? Also, we are grateful no one was sitting on the couch when it flew through the air. There really should be a locking mechanism and they should tell people to take out the glass turntable while driving. We are going to retrofit a fix like others have. Can't believe that this hasn't been an issue before?

Update: After 10 months, the Whirlpool Microwave bit the dust in our 2016 MA.....something shorted and tripped the breaker. Unit is (was) DOA.
Newmar coordinated and sent a local repairman to our home and repaired the unit, which makes the 2nd repair (see above posts). Problem was that the door switches must latch simultaneously or the fuse blows. Repairman had a set of new switches and a fuse and said this is a common fault on this unit. The good news is that the fuse and the switches are accessable for repair without having to drop the unit from the cabinets. My take on this unit from a design aspect, is that the large door was under-engineered with inadequate strength to support the door true enough to contact the latches precisely enough. Both have to engage exactly.
This latest failure occurred during a 3 week trip and we had to buy a cheap unit at Wally World just to get by.
We're now going to change out the unit to the GE Advantium. Better unit and great reviews.
