After five months, first time in Napanee

Upon switching to full time RV, my wife and I traded in our Tiffin Phaeton for a 2016 London Aire in June. We have been living in our London Aire now for five months. We left South Florida in June and have been traveling in the northeast. In fact, we just completed an RV Caravan with Fantasy RV called "Autumn in New England". So far, we have put 4,600 miles on the London Aire.

The London Aire is wonderful and has had a minimum of issues. I have the London Aire specialists at Newmar on speed dial and I think they know my voice now without identifying myself or unit number. This is from all the times I have called asking how this or that works. After owning two Airstream travel trailers, two Tiffin Phaetons, I thought I knew RVs. The London Aire has systems I never used before, so it has been a learning experience.

Part of the deal I made for the purchase of the London Aire with North Trail in Ft. Myers, Florida was to schedule an appointment at Napanee for late October. I knew that my caravan was ending at Niagra Falls and I scheduled this appointment before heading back to South Florida to spend the winter. Well, now we are here. So here are some questions to experienced Newmar owners:

1) My appointment with Newmar is October 31. How soon in advance can I try to get into the Newmar campground? I am in a KOA in Middlebury now, but would like to move to Newmar.
2) Besides some repair issues (front door out of alignment, cabinet adjustments), is there someone there or in the surrounding area that can do customization? This was a common practice at Red Bay, Alabama for Tiffin owners. We have some ideas for our London Aire.
3) Do the service techs have time to make sure we are using certain systems properly?
4) Any advice for first time Napanee visitors?

*No, you probably don't want to stay at Newmar much ahead of time :-). It's NOT a campground - these are parking lots with hookups. There's a campground ~5 miles away (Pla-Mor) that has worked for us. Others will recommend nearby campgrounds too.

2) Besides some repair issues (front door out of alignment, cabinet adjustments), is there someone there or in the surrounding area that can do customization? This was a common practice at Red Bay, Alabama for Tiffin owners. We have some ideas for our London Aire.

* yes there are; you'll get recommendations here or you can search existing threads.

3) Do the service techs have time to make sure we are using certain systems properly?

* Not sure... other campers there might be your best bet.

4) Any advice for first time Napanee visitors?
*. Review the "who is at camp newmar" thread for TONS more info

Don't miss Rise n Roll doughnuts and fill your fridge and freezer with bacon and ground round from Yoder's meats! You'll be glad you did!

Call Carlyle Lehman google focal wood and get his number. We have had work done by him before and it's top notch and a reasonable price.

Hi Glen,
Sal here. We talked a few times before you pulled the trigger as I came out of a Tiffin as well and moved to My 16 DS4369 which has been a gem.

On moving to Napannee prior to your appointment.... They have 2 lots available. One is the Overflow which is usually used for customers who arrive early and before their appointment week. It has electric and Water hookups. There is a sewer dump at the regular lot just a few hundred yards away.
Usually one would move or arrive to the regular lot on the weekend before your appointment (assuming Monday) because it can get full pretty quick and it is first come first serve. There are full hookups there. Nothing fancy in either lot but certainly functional.

There is also An RV park (Pla-Mor) about 1/4 mile from Napannee if you needed to be closer to and wanted to stay there say from now until right before your appointment. There sights are decent but on hard pack ground/grass.

As for Carlyle Lehman
of Focal Wood Products, he is a terrific woodworker. We had a small table made by him to match exactly our interior cabinetry that is multifunctional and while underway sits between the driver and passenger seat. It has built in cup holders and enough space for lunch plates, maps etc.
Then we can also use it as a cocktail table by the sofa it has two leafs and also can has height adjustment. Unfortunately I don't have a photo of mine, but on his website you can see an example. My friend who was in Napannee when we were there who has a Londonair when he sas mine, had Carlyle build one for them.
I would say you if you want something made, you need to call/see him early one so he can do one in during your time there. He is not cheap, but very good. Like a lot of craftsmen in the area, he had spent many years at Newmar.

We enjoyed our time in the area, from Elkhart to Shippsewanna and the Fleamarket etc. Beautiful countryside and people. Also enjoyed the RV Museum and Hall of Fame in Elkhart.
The Tech people are very generous with their time and explanations. For us we had a wonderful experience.
Hope yours is the same.

Yes, the techs will take the time to help you understand any of your systems. Your coach will be taken to building 42 on the east side of town, a couple blocks behind the Burger King for service. When you get there (They'll pick up your coach at the campground and drive it there, you'll have to take the toad over) go through the door to the far right, inside the customer service waiting area, and you'll find the desk with the service team leaders. You will be allowed in the shop to observe what is going on if you wish.

I suggest you get to the "campground" by lunchtime on Saturday, if you want a FHU site. While it may not be as busy this time of year, the FHU area will most likely fill up by Sunday afternoon, at least. Keep in mind, as already mentioned, this is not a luxury resort, on a good day it's dusty gravel.

If the FHU area is full when you get there, to the far west of the same end of the same block is the overflow area. Here you'll have electric and water (check the electric post to be sure it has power before getting set up).

The Dutch Kitchen, almost within walking distance, is great for breakfast. The Mexican restaurant just west of the downtown intersection of 6 and 19 is very good. The local Rise N Rolls is at the intersection of 19 and road 50. The caramel/cinnamon donuts are to die for!

My in laws live in Nappanee, so we go there quite a bit. It's a very nice town, a lot like the Mayberry we all saw on TV as kids.

The Newmar RV lots are about a two block walk to Amish Acres. It has your typical little tourist shops, plus a restaurant with good food. It also has The Round Barn Theatre, which stages very good classic plays. We saw Fiddler on the Roof several weeks ago. Right now they are running The Miracle Worker, which I think is about Helen Keller and her teacher.

My wife makes us stop for pickled beets at Rentown general store, which is a mile or so west of Newmar, and a mile or so south across the tracks. There is a sign at the turn as you head west on Rt 6. There is a restaurant across the street that is typical Amish (good!). It is popular; I think it's only breakfast and lunch.

There are antique/ flea mkt malls and stores around town. Some are off the beaten path. There is one mall out in the general vicinity of Newmar, but not walking distance. It's north of Rt 6. There is one on Rt 6, just a few blocks east of the main street. It's a brick industrial building. There is a general store inside which is pretty similar to what's at Rentown. And there is Rocket Science Ice Cream, which you should not miss.

There are no good pizza places, don't even bother unless you are desperate.
