Air conditioner vent removal

The filters on return ducts on our Baystar are in need of cleaning. It appears that the grate should just pull down, but it is tough and I'm afraid to break it. How do I remove the grate so I can get at the filter?

If it's like our Dutch Star, just give them a firm pull straight down.. yes, it seems like it will break, but it will pop out.

...just twist and turn while pulling down. It will pop out.

X2 what Road_King said. I remove mine a couple of times a year and wash them. I have two sets so I install the spare set and when I remove the old set for washing.
