I have an '03 Dutch Star diesel pusher with a Spartan chassis and Cummins engine. The air gauge #1 will, on occasion of late, drop down to read zero, set off the alarm and red light, and then just as quickly go back and read 125 or so. The service rep at Spartan in Michigan suggested switching the wires on air gauge #1 and #2 to see if the symptoms would show up on the other gauge. If it did show up he said that it probably indicated that the air sender was faulty. It did.
Has anyone had this problem and is it possible for the owner to replace this air sender unit? The unit is located at the base of the brake pedal pedestal on the hood side of the firewall. Any precautions to take?

Have you checked a possible loose ground connection.
Either a screw or wire connection.

I have a 04 Dutch Star with the Cummings ISL engine and it is doing the same thing. The milage is 27K It begin on the way home from purchasing the coach in December. Called Spartin on a Sunday night, they responded within 30 minutes. The No. 1 Air system as I understand is the Brake system. They advised it was a air sender problem (could be a electrical connection on the sender or Gage) and should have no problem getting the coach home.
It happened 4 times in 975 miles. Thanks for giving me a idea of were the sender is located, will do some looking to see if I can find anything.

Followup to my first post regarding the air gauge malfunction.
I stopped at the Cummins facility in Houston to check on the availability of the air sender part. It was not in stock and I was told it was a Newmar part. I called a Newmar dealer in Houston, he emailed Newmar in Nappanee, and got back to tell me that it was back ordered for 30 days.
I guess I wasn't convinced that all of the above was correct so I talked to Mike in the parts department at Spartan. He told me the part was in stock and would be shipped to arrive at the location we were staying at south of Houston within the week. He assured me if I could find the location to switch the wires I could install the new part. It is $99.75.
Is there an organizational chart showing the relationship between Newmar, Spartan, and Cummins?
Wouldn't Newmar get the part for them also from Spartan, or don't they talk to each other? I think that Cummins could also have gotten the part from Spartan.

Dealer experience has been a bust at best on parts I have tried to order from them, we can now order direct from Newmar, TOP TOPIC NEWMAR FORUM, but would say they may steer you to Spartan which you already have done.

I had an almost similar situation with most thought was a transmission temperature sending unit for an Allison transmission. My gage would show a high temperature even though the coach was sitting over night. After calling Newmar, Spartan and Allison I decided to call the gage manufacturer who told me it was a bad gauge and I ordered one directly from them. Under $90 and all was well. The Allison dealer wanted me to leave my coach there and said they would look at it when they could get to it, in approximately 30 days!
Can you take a picture of the part when you get it and let us know how you installed it? Thanks and good luck!

This is s followup of the followup on the malfunctioning air gauge.
I received the new air sensor from Spartan and was ready to install it. Since I was not sure what gauge went with what wire, I called Spartan back to ask them to help me identify the right one. In my conversation with the rep, I found out that there had been a recall regarding the air gauge system.
My coach was in that recall group. They would send me the wire harness that had a resistor to solve the erratic gauge reading. The rep told me to try this fix first to see if it would solve the problem. If not, I could install the replacement air sensor I had purchased and had in my possession. If it did solve the problem I could call back for a RMA #for return of the unneeded part.
I have installed the wiring harness,a simple exercise, but have not tried this fix, as of yet. More later.
You can e-mail me if you want a copy of the recall info or a picture of the air sensor location and "Recall Service Bulletin".

Update to air gauge malfunction:
I installed the wiring harness that was called for in the recall. In talking to the rep at Spartan he said that he really felt this would not take care of the problem that I was having. He said to go ahead and install the new part, air sensor, that I had received from Spartan. The installation of the replacement air sensor was very quick and simple. The shipping cost of $15.29 by UPS seemed a bit steep for a part less than 1 pound. Maybe the USPS Priority Mail would be cheaper.
In our first driving of the motor home since all of the parts were delivered we did not experience any malfunction of the gauge in almost 200 miles.
On now to fix the next problem, whenever that occurs.

I got the recall notice for the air gauges, on my 2004 DSDP, about 4 years ago. I hadn't had any problems, but I brought it in for the recall service. I don't think it took them 15 minutes. As I recall they said it involved putting a jumper wire in the system, but not sure of the exact verbiage, since it was so long ago.

With having the same problem with my 04 DS, going to order the Air Sensor from Spartan tomorrow. Thanks for the info, have found the air sensors and with your picture you e-mailed me should make install easy.
Thanks again.

Hope your problem is solved. Same thing happened to us on our 04 DSDP and the recall and guage swap did not fix. Ended up replacing the speedo head. Mine as well as the air guage, the fuel guage went to zero and bounced right back also.
