Air horn-2000 Dutch Star

I just purchased a 2000 Dutch Star powered by a Cat 3126 on a Freightliner chassis. We love it! It has two air horns mounted on roof. On the center of dash near radio it has air horn switch. When I put it in Air horn position the steering wheel horn button doesn't sound Air Horn. The Chassis horn works but I can't get Air Horn to sound. I'm I missing something or do I have some kind of mechanical problem?

You'll need to find the solenoid that is supposed to open the air valve for horns. Check that it has power when the horn button is depressed. You could also use a jumper wire to test if it works.

Is the air pressure up?

Yes...check the easy things first! That would be the air pressure. If you are trying the horn without the coach running and the air pressure is not up, all you will get is the chassis horn.

Don't ask how I know this.

air pressure is up to 125 psi, I'll check fuses and solenoid.

On my 01 DSDP the electric horn always sounds even with the air horn selected. The problem I found when my air horn didn't work was a bad solenoid which I purchased at NAPA, just bring in the old one as they have a lot of different configurations. To find the solenoid follow the air line on the drivers side that goes up towards the window post, then down to the solenoid. Make sure your the air pressure is zero, you can empty the air tanks by stepping on the brakes, before you take the solenoid off. Good luck!

You can empty the tanks by using the bleed valves as well. Which you should know where they are on your unit so you can bleed off air and water every couple of weeks anyway. There are small loops of wire under the front of the coach near the front wheels on one side or the other. Pull the loop and it will release air pressure from the tank by way of a valve on the bottom of the tanks, one for each tank.

The location of the loops will vary as to the year model of your chassis.
