Hi All,

Recently my air horn stopped working. I've checked the electrical connections and all are fine. I replaced the air horn solenoid. Still no air horn. I've removed the air line to the horns and the solenoid opens (releasing air) as it's supposed to.

I gone so far as to fire up my compressor and blow air into the line.....I can hear air coming out of the horns, but no horn/tone.... I've checked the horns themselves (externally), and there don't appear to be any moving parts.

Anyone have any ideas??

Thanks in advance.

Sebastian

Most air horns operate with a low pressure high volume air supply which causes a diaphragm or reed at the base of the horn to vibrate at a very high speed or frequency. This diaphragm may be defective or otherwise not operating correctly. Just a guess, but may be your problem.

Dave,

I think you may correct since everything works, except the trumpets!

Looking into new trumpets...

I swear this MH is cursed....everytime I look, something else is broken......Maybe I should stop looking!

I used to run air horns on my car.. The trumpets were the #1 pain in the operating system.

But when they worked.. Oh boy were they nice

Once I had my air horns quit and found that they had filled with bugs. Fixed them with water spray with nozzle set to narrowest Jet I could manage.

Good luck - Darrel

I've checked all electrical and air components. All are working properly.

I contacted Hadley (manufacterer of the air horns). They confirmed that the trumpets can (and do) fail if there is any problems with, or debris on the diaphram. These air horn trumpets are non-servicable and can readily fail. He suggested an up-graded trumpet set, and provided me part numbers from NAPA and another supplier. These are the same as used on OTR trucks, and are intended to last a long, long time (not just a couple of years). I've ordered (and received) the new upgraded (servicable/chrome) trumpets, And will be installing these soon. Cost: under $300.00.

Hopefully, all will work properly.

Ours have failed on more than one occasion. Each time i repair them using the same proceedure. I remove the back section of the horn--ours is bolted to the trumpet. I then take sand paper--about 150 grit- and lightly sand the diaphragm. Usually i find some foreign material on the diaphragm.

The horn works for a whlile and then the same thing occurs.

good luck,

SNAIL1,

I checked the old trumpets, and they are not serviceable.

The new trumpets are serviceable, but hopefully I won't have need to do that for a few years.

Yesterday I finally installed the new trumpets, and all is functioning properly....Really nice tone.....and they work!

So, it was, in fact the trumpets that were in need of replacement. Before this, I didn't think they could go bad.

In days of old... The horns failed on the one and only car I ever bought new... I replaced them with air horns

The air systems worked great but the trumpets were a constant source of frustration.. I'm with the "New Trumpet" (or if possible adjust the trumpet) crowd.
