Alaska 2019

I know several folks are going to Alaska this year and NKK has Caravan with preplanned route this year. I thought it may be of interest to some that have not done this trip about places to stay and services along the way. I thought I would post as we make our way thru Canada and the Yukon.

We crossed Canadian border last week on HWY 93, crossing border at Roosville. Border crossing was uneventful, took about an hour. I did have rifles with me and paperwork filled out prior to arrival, this wasnít an issue but they did request slides to be opened and did a respectful search. We did have plenty of beer in cooler, meats in freezer, and vegetables in refrigerator nothing was ever questioned.

Stayed in Cowley, Alberta at friends Friday-Tuesday with gorgeous views of mountains. Highway 3 thru mountains was easy drive. I would recommend stopping to see Franks Slide if in the area, this was a huge rock slide that occurred in 1903.

We stopped in Red Deer, Alberta last night staying at RV THERE YET, (picture included) which is nothing special. DirecTv still works, AT&T and Verizon 2 bars, 50 amp, WiFi at park ok It was a mile drive on dirt road to get here from highway.

I will not be as long winded in future post and continue to update if there seems to be an interest.

FYI someone posted a couple days ago that the roads were clear from 16 to Cassiar highway to Watson lake. Destruction Bay was said to have road conditions. Then fromTok to Glenn Allen to Palmer were in bad shape with ice heaves throughout. Which was the exact same conditions for us last summer. We look forward to hearing about your journey as you go!

Update with regards to firearms (long rifles), transit is allowed thru National parks but no overnight stays. Banff and Jasper National Parks are two popular locations to visit so something to consider if you donít have friends in Canada with firearm permits.

We are making our way to North this year as well. Currently in Colorado Springs and snowing. Plan to be in Alaska most of July and August. Do you know the KKK route?

Bob & Lisa,

Would love to hear anything you care to post about your journey.

We'll be crossing into Canada around June 1 and plan to be in Alaska for the months of July and August. Any information you have will be much appreciated. Safe travels!- Paul

I hope you all have the book of Mike & Terri Church 'Alaskan Camping' which includes Canada and the Yukon. It has everything in it from RV parks to public parks to boondocking spots. They lived in Fairbanks and went to Arizona or Mexico in the winters so they drove the route every year and really know the places to stay.

Also, you don't have to make a ton of reservations. We only made two for the whole summer - the July 4 weekend (Alaskans like to camp, too) & for 5 nights in Denali's Teklanika campground - the farthest you can drive. Those we only made a couple weeks before being in the area. As it turned out we were near Denali a little early so on a whim we boondocked in a lovely spot and drove into the park early morning. We easily secured a spot in Denali's front campground for 5 nights. Being in Denali 10 nights we saw 'the mountain' 7 of 10 days and every one of the big animals - more than once. It was an awesome trip. We went up on the Alaskan and returned on the Cassier.
